Write or plan non-fiction: $ARGUMENTS

$ARGUMENTS can include:

The Non-Fiction Problem

Fiction creates a world. Non-fiction reveals one. The craft challenge is different: you must make real things as vivid as invented ones, and you must be honest about what you know and don't know while still being compelling to read.

The enemy of good non-fiction is not inaccuracy — it's boredom. The reader already has the facts available to them. They're reading you for the meaning, the frame, the argument, the surprise.

Part 1: Argument Architecture

Every piece of non-fiction is an argument — even when it doesn't feel like one. A profile argues this person matters. A history argues these events connect this way. A how-to argues this method works. Know your argument.

The Thesis Hierarchy

Level 1 — The Claim: What are you arguing? State it in one sentence. If you can't, you're not ready to write.

Level 2 — The Stakes: Why should anyone care? What happens if the reader accepts this? What happens if they don't?

Level 3 — The Surprise: What does this argument reveal that the reader didn't already know or believe? If the answer is "nothing," you don't have a piece — you have a summary.

Test your thesis:

• Can a reasonable person disagree? (If no one can disagree, it's not an argument — it's a platitude.)
• Is it specific enough to be falsifiable? ("Technology changes things" = too vague. "Social media destroyed the American attention span between 2010 and 2020" = arguable.)
• Does it have an emotional core? The best non-fiction arguments are intellectually sound AND emotionally resonant.

Argument Structures

The Revelation: Open with what everyone thinks they know. Systematically dismantle it. Reveal the deeper truth. Close with implications.

• Best for: Counterintuitive arguments, debunking, "everything you know is wrong"
• Risk: Comes across as contrarian if the revelation isn't genuine

The Accumulation: Build evidence layer by layer. Each section adds a new piece. By the end, the weight of evidence makes the conclusion feel inevitable.

• Best for: Complex arguments, investigative pieces, cases that need lots of evidence
• Risk: Can feel plodding if the sections don't each carry their own interest

The Journey: Take the reader on the writer's own path of discovery. "I thought X, then I found Y, which led me to Z."

• Best for: Memoir-essays, personal investigations, process pieces
• Risk: Can be self-indulgent if the writer's journey isn't inherently interesting

The Juxtaposition: Place two subjects side by side. Let the comparison generate the argument without stating it.

• Best for: Profiles, comparative analysis, cultural criticism
• Risk: Can feel arbitrary if the juxtaposition isn't genuinely illuminating

The Spiral: Return to the same idea at increasing depth. Each pass adds complexity. The reader's understanding deepens with each orbit.

• Best for: Philosophical essays, meditations, idea-driven pieces
• Risk: Can feel repetitive if each pass doesn't genuinely add new depth

Part 2: Evidence and Source Integration

Evidence is the non-fiction writer's raw material. How you handle it separates craft from content mill.

The Evidence Hierarchy

Tier 1 — Primary Sources: Original documents, data, firsthand accounts, direct quotes from interviews. The gold standard. Readers trust what they can verify.

Tier 2 — Expert Analysis: Published scholarship, analysis by credentialed experts, peer-reviewed research. Establishes credibility.

Tier 3 — Anecdotal Evidence: Stories, personal experiences, case studies. Creates vivid engagement but doesn't prove anything alone.

Tier 4 — Received Wisdom: "Everyone knows," common assumptions, conventional wisdom. Use only to set up your argument against it.

The rule: Lead with Tier 1-2. Use Tier 3 to make Tier 1-2 vivid. Use Tier 4 only as a foil.

Integration Techniques

The Data-Story Sandwich: Open with a vivid anecdote (Tier 3). Support with data (Tier 1). Close with implication. The anecdote creates emotional engagement; the data creates intellectual conviction.

The Expert Weave: Don't just quote experts — contextualize them. "Dr. Jane Smith, who spent 20 years studying X at [Institution], puts it simply: '[quote].'" The context gives the quote weight.

The Primary Source Reveal: Present the document or data directly. Let the reader encounter it. Then interpret: "What this shows is..."

Never:

• Stack quotes without your own analysis between them
• Present data without context (what does this number mean? How does it compare?)
• Use "studies show" without naming the study
• Invent or fabricate any source, quote, statistic, or anecdote
• Present Tier 3 evidence as if it were Tier 1

Citation Principles

• Cite everything that isn't common knowledge or your own analysis
• In-text attribution is more readable than footnotes for most formats
• Name the person and their credential: "Harvard economist [Name]" not just "[Name]"
• For statistics: name the source, the year, and the methodology if relevant
• When paraphrasing: "According to [source]..." or "Drawing from [source]..."
• When quoting: Use blockquotes for passages >30 words; inline quotes for shorter

Part 3: Chapter and Section Architecture

The Opening

The opening of any non-fiction piece must do three things in the first 200 words:

1. Create a question in the reader's mind (not answer one)
2. Establish the voice (the reader decides in the first paragraph whether they trust you)
3. Signal the stakes (why this matters)

Strong opening moves:

• The scene: Drop the reader into a moment. "On the morning of March 15, 2023, at 6:47 AM, the server logs at [Company] began showing something no one had ever seen before."
• The question: Ask directly. "What would you do if everything you'd been taught about [X] turned out to be wrong?"
• The counterintuitive claim: State your surprising thesis immediately. "The most productive people in the world don't use to-do lists."
• The telling detail: A single concrete detail that contains the whole argument in miniature.

Weak openings to avoid:

• Dictionary definitions ("Webster's defines X as...")
• Broad historical sweeps ("Since the dawn of civilization...")
• Thesis statements with no hook ("In this essay, I will argue...")
• Questions that are too broad ("Have you ever wondered about [topic]?")

The Middle (Section Architecture)

Each section of a non-fiction piece should:

1. Have its own argument — a sub-claim that supports the main thesis
2. Open with a hook — not a topic sentence, but a reason to keep reading
3. Present evidence — data, examples, expert testimony
4. Provide analysis — what the evidence means (this is where the writer earns their keep)
5. Close with a bridge — connection to the next section or return to the main argument

Section length: 600-1500 words for articles. 2000-4000 words for book chapters. Vary within the piece.

Transitions: The best transition is no transition — the previous section's closing image or idea naturally opens the next section's territory. If you need "Furthermore" or "Additionally," the structure is wrong.

The Closing

The closing of a non-fiction piece must NOT:

• Summarize what you just said ("In conclusion, we have seen that...")
• Introduce major new evidence (that belongs in the middle)
• End with a cliché ("Only time will tell...")

The closing SHOULD:

• Widen the lens: From the specific argument to the broader implication
• Return to the opening: Echo the opening image, scene, or question — but now the reader sees it differently
• Leave a productive question: Not "what does this mean?" but "what should we do about this?"
• Land on an image: The strongest closings end with something visual, concrete, and resonant

Part 4: Making Ideas Vivid

The hardest skill in non-fiction: making abstract ideas concrete without oversimplifying.

The Analogy Ladder

When explaining a complex idea:

1. Name it precisely — Use the correct technical term. Don't dumb down.
2. Define it clearly — One sentence, plain language.
3. Analogize it — "It's like [something the reader already understands]."
4. Show it in action — A specific example of the idea at work.
5. Show it failing — What happens when the idea doesn't apply or goes wrong.

Steps 3-5 make the idea vivid. Step 1-2 alone is a textbook. Steps 3-5 alone is pop science that oversimplifies.

Narrative Non-Fiction Techniques

Scene construction: Yes, non-fiction can have scenes. When you have the material (from research, interviews, or primary sources), reconstruct moments with the same tools as fiction: sensory detail, dialogue, pacing. Label reconstruction clearly.

Character in non-fiction: Real people are characters too. Show them through action and speech, not biographical summary. "Dr. Smith has published 47 papers on..." is a resume. "Dr. Smith pulled up a chair, turned her laptop around, and said 'Let me show you something no one believes yet'" is a character.

The telling detail: One precise detail can do the work of a paragraph of explanation. "The average American checks their phone 96 times per day" says more about attention than a thousand words of analysis.

Mode: Write

When generating non-fiction:

1. Establish the thesis (Level 1, 2, and 3)
2. Select the argument structure
3. Plan the section architecture
4. Identify evidence needs (use author-research if research is required)
5. Draft with all craft principles active
6. Self-review against the editorial lens before delivering

Mode: Plan

When outlining non-fiction:

1. Develop the thesis hierarchy
2. Select the argument structure with justification
3. Map sections: for each, the sub-claim, evidence needed, and approximate word count
4. Identify the opening move and closing strategy
5. Note research gaps that need to be filled before writing
6. Deliver as a structured outline

Mode: Improve

When revising existing non-fiction:

1. Identify the thesis (or note its absence)
2. Map the current structure against the argument structures above
3. Check evidence handling (hierarchy, integration, citation)
4. Apply prose-craft principles to the line level
5. Provide specific revision recommendations, prioritized

Rules

• Never invent evidence. Non-fiction's contract with the reader is truth. Fabricated quotes, statistics, or anecdotes — even plausible ones — are a violation.
• The thesis must earn its place. Don't argue what's obvious. Don't argue what no one disagrees with. Find the genuine tension.
• Analysis is the job. Anyone can present facts. The non-fiction writer's value is in the meaning they draw from facts. If you strip out your analysis and the piece still makes sense, you haven't written anything — you've compiled.
• Respect the reader's intelligence. Don't over-explain. Don't use "in other words" unless the original words were genuinely confusing. Don't summarize at the end of every section.
• Concrete before abstract. Show before you tell. Example before principle. Scene before analysis. The reader's brain processes concrete images faster than abstract claims.
• Every paragraph earns its keep. If a paragraph doesn't advance the argument, support it with evidence, or make it vivid — cut it.
