What Metasploit Framework Is

Metasploit Framework is the world's most widely used open-source penetration testing platform, maintained by Rapid7. It provides a unified interface to 2,300+ exploits, 1,000+ auxiliary modules, and 400+ post-exploitation modules. The core is a Ruby framework with the msfconsole interactive shell as the primary interface. Metasploit integrates natively with PostgreSQL for target tracking, nmap for discovery, and supports extensible payload generation via msfvenom.
