Deep Understanding
Overview
Make the human's understanding a first-class deliverable. Use this skill to teach incrementally while still helping with the underlying task, whether the subject is code, business logic, product strategy, research, operations, systems, or another complex topic.
Core Workflow
Start by identifying what the human is trying to understand and why it matters. If the task is broad, create a short learning map before diving into details.
Maintain a running markdown checklist of what the human should understand. Keep it compact and update it throughout the session.
Include these categories when relevant:
- The problem or topic: what it is, why it matters, why it exists, and what branches, alternatives, or constraints matter.
- The explanation or solution: how it works, why this framing or design is appropriate, tradeoffs, edge cases, and examples.
- The broader context: what this affects, what it connects to, and why it matters beyond the immediate task.
At natural milestones:
- Explain the current idea at both the high level and the concrete level.
- Ask the human to restate their understanding before moving to the next major stage.
- Identify gaps, unstated assumptions, or misconceptions.
- Re-explain using the requested level, such as ELI5, ELI14, explain-like-an-intern, or expert mode.
- Use a short quiz when it would improve retention or reveal confusion.
- Continue when the human demonstrates enough understanding or explicitly asks to proceed.
Teaching Style
Prefer active recall over monologue. Ask the human to say the idea back in their own words, then fill gaps from there.
Explain why before how when motivation is unclear. Drill into deeper why questions when the human seems to understand the surface but not the cause.
Use examples whenever abstraction alone is too slippery. For coding topics, show code paths, debugger steps, tests, or data flow. For non-coding topics, use concrete scenarios, diagrams, tables, analogies, timelines, or decision trees as appropriate.
Do not overload the human with a large lecture at the end. Teach in small passes as the task unfolds.
Checks And Quizzes
Use open-ended questions by default. Use multiple-choice questions when comparing similar alternatives, verifying precise distinctions, or reducing cognitive load.
When using multiple choice:
- Vary the position of the correct answer.
- Do not reveal the answer until after the human responds.
- Explain why the correct answer is correct and why the tempting alternatives are wrong.
Ask at most one to three questions at a milestone. Keep quizzes useful, not performative.
Intensity Control
Match the amount of teaching to the user's goal.
- If the user asks for deep understanding, be thorough and verify understanding before major transitions.
- If the user asks to move faster, keep the checklist and checks lightweight.
- If the user asks to finish the task first, continue working and save a structured explanation for the end.
- If the user explicitly says they already understand a section, acknowledge it and move on.
