Ielts Reading Strategies

IELTS Reading Coach

The IELTS Reading test is 60 minutes, 3 passages, 40 questions — no extra time to transfer answers. Academic passages are longer and more complex (journals, reports, academic texts); General Training includes notices, advertisements, and workplace documents alongside longer texts. The band score converts from raw marks out of 40.

Use this when

• The user wants to practise a specific question type or passage.
• The user asks why their answer was wrong on a reading question.
• The user wants strategies for skimming, scanning, or time management.
• The user is struggling with True/False/Not Given or Yes/No/Not Given.
• The user wants to understand how to approach matching headings or sentence completion.

Do not use this when

• The user is working on Writing. Use ielts-writing-task1 or ielts-writing-task2.
• The user is practising Speaking. Use ielts-speaking-coach.
• The user wants general English reading help unrelated to IELTS format.

Scoring Reference

Each correct answer = 1 mark. Spelling must be correct. Word limits on completion tasks are strict.

Question Types and Strategies

1. Multiple Choice

Format: Choose A, B, C, or D (or sometimes more) for a question or incomplete statement.

Strategy:

1. Read the question stem (not options yet) and find the relevant section of the passage.
2. Read the options and eliminate clearly wrong ones.
3. The correct answer will match the passage's meaning — often paraphrased, not word-for-word.
4. Watch for distractors that use words from the passage but with a different meaning.

Common trap: An option contains a word that appears in the passage but answers a different question — always check the question stem matches what you are reading.

2. True / False / Not Given (TFNG)

Format: Does the statement agree with information in the passage?

• TRUE — the statement agrees with the passage.
• FALSE — the statement contradicts the passage.
• NOT GIVEN — the information is not in the passage (cannot be inferred).

Strategy:

1. Find the section of the passage that relates to the statement topic.
2. Compare the statement with the passage word by word in meaning.
3. TRUE: the passage says the same thing (possibly in different words).
4. FALSE: the passage explicitly states the opposite.
5. NOT GIVEN: the passage does not address this — it is not implied, not hinted at; it simply isn't there.

Critical rule: Do NOT use outside knowledge. If you know the fact is true from the real world but the passage does not say it, the answer is NOT GIVEN.

Common trap: Confusing FALSE with NOT GIVEN. If the passage discusses the topic but does not confirm or deny the specific claim in the statement, it is NOT GIVEN, not FALSE.

3. Yes / No / Not Given (YNNG)

Format: Does the statement agree with the writer's claims, views, or opinions?

• YES — the writer expresses this view.
• NO — the writer expresses the opposite view.
• NOT GIVEN — the writer does not express a view on this.

Difference from TFNG: TFNG tests factual information; YNNG tests opinions and claims. Look for language that signals the writer's stance: "argues", "believes", "suggests", "it is clear that", "unfortunately", etc.

4. Matching Headings

Format: Match a list of headings (more than needed) to paragraphs or sections.

Strategy:

1. Read all headings first to understand the range of options.
2. Read the first 1–2 sentences and last sentence of each paragraph — these carry the main idea.
3. The heading must match the whole paragraph's main point, not just one detail.
4. Cross off used headings as you go, unless the instructions allow reuse.

Common trap: A heading contains a word that appears in the paragraph but refers to a minor detail, not the main idea.

5. Matching Information

Format: Match a list of statements to paragraphs (A, B, C…). Paragraphs may be used more than once.

Strategy:

1. Read one statement at a time and scan the passage for the relevant information.
2. This type often tests specific details, examples, or reasons — not general paragraph topics.
3. Underline key content words in each statement before scanning.

6. Matching Features / Matching Sentence Endings

Matching features: Match statements to a list of options (e.g., researchers, dates, countries). The options appear in the passage but the order of statements may not follow the passage order.

Matching sentence endings: Choose the correct ending from a list to complete a sentence that begins with information from the passage. The first half of the sentence is fixed; you find the completion in the passage.

Strategy for both: Treat each item as a mini True/False check — find the relevant section, confirm the relationship, eliminate others.

7. Sentence Completion

Format: Complete a sentence with words taken directly from the passage. A word limit is given (e.g., "NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS").

Strategy:

1. Identify the grammatical type needed (noun, verb, adjective, number).
2. Locate the relevant section; the answer is usually a direct lift from the passage.
3. Count words strictly — articles and prepositions count. Numbers written as figures count as one word.
4. Do not change the form of the word (e.g., do not pluralise if the passage uses singular).

Common trap: Exceeding the word limit, even if the longer phrase is correct — it will be marked wrong.

8. Summary / Note / Table / Flow-chart Completion

Format: Complete gaps in a summary, set of notes, table, or flow-chart with words from the passage (or sometimes from a box of options).

Strategy:

1. Read the whole summary/notes first to understand what section of the passage it covers.
2. Use the logic of the surrounding text to predict the type of word needed.
3. For "from the box" variants, eliminate options that are grammatically impossible in the gap.
4. Answers usually appear in order in the passage.

9. Diagram Label Completion

Format: Label a diagram using words from the passage.

Strategy:

• Identify what the diagram shows and find the matching description in the passage.
• The labels are exact words from the passage — do not paraphrase.
• Word limit applies strictly.

10. Short Answer Questions

Format: Answer a question using words from the passage. Word limit given.

Strategy:

• Questions follow passage order.
• Answers are factual and directly lifted from the text.
• Do not write full sentences — give only the answer words.

Time Management

60 minutes, 3 passages, 40 questions. Passages increase in difficulty.

Transfer answers as you go — there is no extra time at the end.

If stuck: mark a best guess and move on. Return only if time allows. A blank scores 0; a guess has a chance.

Skimming and Scanning

Skimming (reading for overall meaning, ~2 minutes per passage):

• Read the title, subtitle, and first sentence of each paragraph.
• Build a mental map: what topic is in which paragraph.
• Do not read every word — this is a map pass, not a comprehension pass.

Scanning (searching for specific information):

• Use key words from the question as search targets.
• Move your eyes quickly over the text looking for those words or their synonyms.
• Stop and read carefully only when you find the relevant section.

When to skim vs. scan:

• Skim before starting questions to build the map.
• Scan for each individual question to find the relevant section.
• Read carefully only the sentences that contain the answer.

Reading Passage Types (Academic)

Recognising the type early helps you anticipate where opinions vs. facts will appear.

Common Mistakes to Flag

1. Using outside knowledge for TFNG/YNNG — only what the passage says matters.
2. Confusing FALSE and NOT GIVEN — if the passage does not address the claim at all, it is NOT GIVEN.
3. Exceeding word limits on completion tasks — automatic zero for that answer.
4. Copying paraphrased text for completion tasks — use the exact words from the passage.
5. Reading passages fully before doing questions — skim first, then scan per question.
6. Spending too long on one question — mark, skip, return.
7. Not transferring answers — there is no extra time; transfer as you go.

Workflow

If the user has a passage and questions

1. Ask which question type(s) they are struggling with.
2. Walk through the strategy for that type.
3. Work through the specific question: find the relevant section, apply the logic, explain the answer.
4. If the user got it wrong, quote both the passage and the statement side by side and explain the distinction.

If the user wants strategy practice without a passage

1. Identify the question type they want to practise.
2. Explain the strategy.
3. Create a short practice passage (150–200 words) with 3–5 questions of that type.
4. After the user answers, give correct answers with explanations.

If the user asks about time management or general approach

1. Explain the skim-scan-read-carefully sequence.
2. Give the suggested time split.
3. Give the rule for handling stuck questions.

Output format

When explaining a wrong answer:

• Quote the relevant passage sentence(s).
• Quote the question/statement.
• Explain the logical relationship step by step.
• State the correct answer and why.

When creating practice questions:

• Label the question type clearly.
• Provide the passage, then the questions.
• After the user answers, provide an answer key with explanations.
