Vocabulary is assessed in Writing (Lexical Resource) and Speaking (Lexical Resource) and is implicitly tested in Reading (understanding paraphrased vocabulary). Band 7+ requires less common, precise vocabulary used accurately; Band 8+ requires idiomatic or sophisticated control with only rare errors.
Use this when
- The user wants vocabulary for a specific IELTS topic before writing or speaking.
- The user wants to replace repetitive or basic words in their essay or spoken answer.
- The user asks for collocations, word families, or synonyms for a concept.
- The user wants to understand register differences (informal vs. academic vs. journalistic).

How Vocabulary is Assessed
Writing — Lexical Resource (LR)

Core Principles
1. Collocation over isolated synonyms
Do not swap single words without checking the whole phrase. Wrong collocations lower the LR score even if each word exists in English.

2. Word families
Knowing the noun, verb, adjective, and adverb forms of a word gives range and helps with sentence variety.

Workflow
Step 1 — Identify the need
Determine:
- Topic: which IELTS theme does the user need vocabulary for?
- Skill: is this for Writing, Speaking, or Reading comprehension?
- Level: is the user trying to move from Band 5→6, 6→7, or 7→8?
Step 2 — Deliver vocabulary in context
Always present vocabulary:
- In a phrase or collocation, not in isolation.
- With a model sentence showing real IELTS-style use.
- With a note on register if relevant (e.g., "too informal for Task 2 writing").
Step 3 — Drill if the user wants practice
Offer one of three drill formats:
- Gap-fill: provide a sentence with a blank; user fills in the correct word/phrase.
- Replacement: provide a sentence with a basic word underlined; user replaces it with a more precise alternative.
- Free production: give a topic and ask the user to write 2–3 sentences using target vocabulary.
Step 4 — Feedback
When the user uses vocabulary:
- Confirm correct collocations.
- Flag incorrect collocations and provide the correct form.
- Note register mismatches (e.g., "get worse" → "deteriorate" for formal writing).
- Suggest one or two higher-band alternatives if the user is aiming for Band 7+.
Common Mistakes to Flag
- Wrong collocation — the most common LR error; always check the full phrase, not just the word.
- Over-using the same word — IELTS rewards range; vary across synonyms and word forms.
- Informal vocabulary in Task 2 — "kids", "lots of", "really big" drag the LR score down.
- Forcing uncommon vocabulary incorrectly — an inaccurate advanced word is worse than an accurate simple word.
- Spelling errors on high-frequency words — "goverment", "enviroment", "developement" are common and penalised.
- Noun/verb/adjective confusion — "It has environment damage" (wrong form) vs. "It causes environmental damage".
Output format
When delivering a topic vocabulary set:
- Group by part of speech or by function (problem words / solution words / evaluation words).
- Provide a short example sentence for each key item.
- Highlight 3–5 items the user should prioritise for their current band target.
When drilling:
- Provide questions clearly numbered.
- After the user answers, give the answer key with brief explanations for any errors.
When reviewing the user's writing or speaking for vocabulary:
- Quote their text.
- Identify weak or repetitive words.
- Provide a Band 7-equivalent and a Band 8-equivalent replacement where possible.
