AutoReview Create-Rule Wizard

Cross-platform. Snippets below use bash-style env-var syntax (${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}). Claude Code's Bash tool runs Git Bash on Windows so these work as-is; on native PowerShell substitute $env:CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT, on cmd use %CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT%. Plugin requires Node ≥22 — only assumed binary.

Seven steps. Never skip steps, even when the user asks you to. Users underestimate how much rule-authoring shapes verdict quality — a rule with the wrong trigger hits 10× more files than intended, or none; a rule with vague body produces inconsistent LLM verdicts. If the user says "just write the file", run steps 2–7 compressed but don't skip.

The skill owns the flow. Writing directly to .autoreview/rules/*.md bypasses breadth check + test-drive and ships broken rules.

The 7 steps

1. What to enforce? Keep asking until the convention is concrete. If user already gave a clear convention, skip to step 2.

2. Propose name + trigger. Grep the repo to learn its layout first. If the convention is directory-bound, propose dir:"<dir>" (shorthand for path:"<dir>/**") directly.

3. Breadth check. Run node ${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/scripts/bin/check-breadth.mjs --expr '<expr>'. Reports match count and first 10 sample paths — zero LLM cost. Iterate until the match set looks right; a trigger that matches 0 files is dead code, a trigger that matches 1000 files will 10× the per-commit review cost. Use --rule <id> to print what an existing rule currently matches.

4. Pass/fail examples. Read 2–3 matched files with the Read tool. Reason out loud about whether each would pass the draft rule body. No LLM review call yet.

5. Tier selection. Read .autoreview/config.yaml and show the user which tiers are defined. Ask which tier to assign. Explain the cost/time tradeoffs:

   If the user picks a tier name not yet defined in the repo's tiers: section (e.g., critical isn't configured), walk them through adding it inline: propose the tier-config block, explain each field, get explicit user consent, then apply the edit to .autoreview/config.yaml before continuing.

6. Test-drive. Run node ${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/scripts/bin/reviewer-test.mjs --rule <id> --file <path> against 2–3 sample files using the chosen tier. If verdicts are wrong, go back to step 1.

7. Save. Run node ${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/scripts/bin/create-rule.mjs save --name '<n>' --triggers '<t>' --tier '<tier>' --body-file <tmp> --to '<rel-path>'. End with: Rule saved at .autoreview/rules/<rel-path>. Commit when ready. Do not run git commit yourself.

Trigger DSL reference

• path:"src/api/**/*.ts" — glob on path. Brace expansion supported: path:"src/{api,handlers}/**".
• content:"@Controller" — regex on file content.
• dir:"src/api" — shorthand for path:"src/api/**".
• Combine with AND / OR / NOT and parens: (path:"src/**" OR path:"lib/**") AND NOT content:"TODO".

Every controller must validate input with zod before processing.
Reject with HTTP 400 if validation fails.

Triggers run locally (zero LLM cost). The body is what the reviewer LLM checks against file content. tier: controls which provider+model from config.yaml handles the review — omit to use default.

Editing or deleting existing rules

Open the file under .autoreview/rules/<id>.md in any editor and change the body or triggers: line. Delete the file to remove the rule entirely. The wizard is for new rules only — direct edits are fine.

For remote (corp-shipped) rules, use autoreview:override-rule to adjust tier/severity/type without forking.

Red flags — STOP

If you find yourself about to call Write on a .autoreview/rules/*.md path without having run check-breadth first, stop. Use the save subcommand at step 7.
