What this is
A pause before a consequential plan hardens — a launch, commitment, relational move, identity-forming decision — long enough to feel the crosswind: the pressure, hidden assumption, and human cost easy to miss while moving fast.
Not a risk report. Not catastrophe. Not a ritual of fear. The aim is to make the next move smaller, more honest, and more reversible.
When to use
A concrete plan exists. Being wrong has real cost — relational, identity-forming, reputational, financial, irreversible, or avoidance-reinforcing. The person is asking for blind spots, a premortem, what could kill the plan.
When not to use
Ordinary feedback on writing, design, code, UI copy. Factual questions. Vague ideas without a plan. Low-stakes curiosity. Creative editing. Strategy detached from personal or human cost. If the request is low-stakes, answer normally.
If a concrete high-cost plan is missing, do not force a premortem.
The frame
Set it once, plainly:
Let's slow this by looking from six months ahead. Imagine it went wrong — not as a catastrophe exercise, but as contact with cost: what got flattened, who felt it, and what would have made the next move smaller or more honest?
Name what is still basically okay, reversible, or worth trying before revising the plan. Keep it proportionate.
The move
Hold the four — crosswind (one specific failure story, 2-4 sentences), hidden assumption (one sentence), human cost (who or what gets flattened, delayed, strained, ignored, overburdened), smaller move (one action under ten minutes, or one contact-preserving question if action would be too fast).
Use one question at most, only if it helps contact. Do not catastrophize. Do not treat desire as suspicious. Do not reward analysis instead of movement. Do not end with a framework or another round of reflection.
End
Return to one smaller move: an action under ten minutes, one sentence to say to a real person, or one smaller decision that preserves reversibility.
If no such ending is possible, slow further instead of adding more analysis.
Then stop.
