Carrying Capacity

Overview

The maximum population size or workload that an environment can sustain indefinitely given available resources (food, water, space, energy). When population exceeds carrying capacity, resource depletion causes collapse or decline back to sustainable levels. The principle applies beyond ecology: organizations have carrying capacity for headcount, infrastructure has capacity for load, and individuals have capacity for commitments.

Core Principle

Every system has a maximum sustainable load determined by resource constraints. Exceeding this limit triggers corrective forces (depletion, collapse, or forced reduction).

Biological mechanism: Population growth → resource scarcity → starvation/disease/competition → population decline → resource recovery → cycle repeats.

Dynamic Carrying Capacity

Carrying capacity is not fixed:

• Technology/efficiency improvements can increase it
• Resource degradation can decrease it
• External inputs (trade, imports) can temporarily extend it

Execution Steps

1. Identify the System and Resources

• What is the population/load? (users, team size, requests/second)
• What are limiting resources? (bandwidth, attention, time, money)
• How are resources consumed? (linear, exponential, step-function)

Example: Engineering team (population) limited by code review capacity (resource)

2. Measure Current Load vs. Capacity

• Current population/load: How much demand exists now?
• Available resources: What's the total supply?
• Utilization rate: What % of capacity is consumed?
• Headroom: How close to the limit?

Example: 50 engineers, 5 senior reviewers, 100 PRs/week, reviewers at 90% capacity

3. Estimate Carrying Capacity

Formula approach: Capacity = (Total Resources) / (Consumption per Unit)

Empirical approach: Observe where system degrades

• Quality declines (bugs increase)
• Speed drops (latency rises)
• Morale falls (burnout signals)

Example: If each reviewer handles 20 PRs/week, capacity = 5 × 20 = 100 PRs/week

4. Identify Constraints and Dependencies

• What is the bottleneck resource? (Theory of Constraints)
• Are resources renewable or finite?
• What breaks first when overloaded?

Example: Senior reviewer time is bottleneck (can't be easily scaled)

5. Manage Within Capacity

Option A: Reduce load

• Limit population growth (hiring freeze)
• Reduce consumption per unit (smaller PRs)
• Cull low-priority work

Option B: Increase capacity

• Add resources (hire reviewers, buy servers)
• Improve efficiency (better tools, training)
• Outsource/automate (CI checks reduce review burden)

Option C: Accept degradation

• Acknowledge trade-offs (longer review times)
• Communicate constraints
• Prevent collapse (temporary overshoot acceptable if brief)

Anti-Patterns

Ignoring the Limit: Assuming growth can continue indefinitely

Magical Thinking: "We'll figure it out when we get there" (overshoot without plan)

Linear Extrapolation: Assuming capacity scales with growth (often doesn't)

Short-Term Optimization: Borrowing from reserves without replenishment

Capacity Theater: Measuring wrong constraints (storage grows but compute doesn't)
