The Process

Step 1: Establish Performance Baseline

Measure current performance across key metrics before any optimization. Use real-world data from production users, not just synthetic tests.

Front-end metrics: Core Web Vitals (Largest Contentful Paint <2.5s, First Input Delay <100ms, Cumulative Layout Shift <0.1), Time to Interactive, bundle size, number of requests.

Step 2: Define Performance Budgets

Step 3: Profile to Identify Bottlenecks

Front-end techniques: Code splitting (load features on-demand), tree shaking (remove unused code), lazy loading (images, routes, components), image optimization (WebP/AVIF formats, responsive images, CDN), caching strategies (service workers, HTTP caching), minimize JavaScript execution (debounce, throttle, virtualize long lists).

Back-end techniques: Horizontal scaling (add instances vs. bigger servers), multi-level caching (CDN → application → database), database optimization (indexing, query tuning, connection pooling, denormalization when needed), asynchronous processing (offload heavy work to background jobs), CDN for static assets.

Measure impact: Re-run profiling after each optimization. Quantify improvement (e.g., "Lazy loading reduced bundle size from 450KB to 180KB, improving LCP by 1.8s").

Step 5: Monitor and Maintain Performance

Establish continuous monitoring to catch regressions early and track performance over time. Automate alerts for budget violations.

Real User Monitoring (RUM): Collect performance metrics from actual users in production. Track Core Web Vitals, page load times, API latencies across user segments.

Synthetic monitoring: Run automated tests from multiple locations/devices (Lighthouse CI, WebPageTest API). Set up scheduled checks and alert on regressions.
