Body
1. Service Packaging (Tiered Offerings)
Structure services into 3 tiers to anchor value:
| Tier | Name | Description | Price Multiplier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | Essentials | Core deliverable, fixed scope | 1x |
| Standard | Recommended | Essentials + extras, faster turnaround | 1.6x–2x |
| Premium | Full-Service | Everything + priority support, revisions | 2.5x–4x |
2. Pricing Strategy
Three models:
| Model | When | How | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hourly | Unclear scope, maintenance, ongoing | Track time (Toggl/Clockify), bill monthly | Simple, covers overruns | Penalizes efficiency, caps earnings |
| Project | Clear scope, fixed deliverable | Estimate hours × rate + 20% buffer | Predictable for client | Risk if scope grows |
| Value-Based | High-impact, measurable outcomes | Price = % of client's ROI from your work | Highest earnings | Harder to sell |
Rate formula: Target Income / Billable Days = Daily Rate → Daily Rate / Hours per Day = Hourly Rate. Example: $100k / 200 days / 6h = $83/h → round to $100/h. Raise rates 10–25% every 6–12 months or when at 80%+ capacity.
3. Client Onboarding
Step 1 — Discovery call: Understand pain, scope, timeline, budget. Key questions: "What's the #1 problem you're solving? What outcome makes this a success?" Do NOT quote on the call.
Step 2 — Proposal: Problem Statement → Solution → Timeline → Investment → Next Steps.
Step 3 — Contract (always): Scope of work, payment terms (30–50% deposit), revision caps, termination clause, IP transfer on final payment, NDA if needed.
Step 4 — Deposit & kickoff: Collect 30–50% upfront. Send invoice within 24h. Kickoff email with access requests and first milestone date.
4. Scope Creep Prevention
Signals: "While you're at it…", "small tweak", expanding requirements, email ping-pong.
Tactics: Contract lists what's NOT included. Change request process with cost + timeline impact. Revision caps in packages. Weekly recap reinforces scope.
Change request template:
Subject: Scope Change — [Project]
Description:
Timeline impact (+X days):
Added cost ($Y):
[ ] Proceed [ ] Discuss
5. Invoicing
Net-15 terms. Late fee 1.5–5%/month. Pause work after 14 days overdue. Payment methods: Stripe, PayPal, bank transfer, Wise. Invoice on milestone completion immediately.
6. Portfolio & Testimonials
Case study format: Problem → Solution → Result. Quantify outcomes. 5–8 showcase projects. Ask for testimonial within 48h of positive delivery.
Testimonial request:
Subject: Quick feedback?
Hi [Client],
I'm building my portfolio — would you mind sharing 2-3 sentences about:
1. What problem I helped you solve
2. What it was like working with me
3. Any results you've seen
Even a 30s voice memo works — I'll transcribe it. Thanks!
Common Pitfalls
- No contract: Verbal agreements fail. Always write it down.
- Underpricing: Freelancers undervalue by 30–50%. Use the rate formula.
- No deposit: Never start without 30–50% upfront.
- Scope creep without billing: Small changes add up. Bill everything outside scope.
- No savings buffer: Maintain 3–6 months of expenses. Income is lumpy.
- Not raising rates: Inflation + experience means rates must rise yearly.
