Core Frameworks & Mental Models

The GTO Premise

The Profit Equation: Profit = opponent mistakes - our mistakes. You control only your own mistakes. Fix leaks in your own game, find what others are doing wrong, and adjust to exploit them. GTO study is not just about balance — it's about understanding the game at its core and actively using that knowledge to generate value.

Expected Value (EV) — The Decision Engine

EV = (%W × $W) - (%L × $R)

Every poker decision reduces to EV. Always choose the highest EV action. The EV of folding is always zero (money already in the pot doesn't belong to you). Small edges compound over thousands of hands into massive lifetime profits. Use EV Rescaled (EV / Pot) to compare action quality across different pot sizes.

Think of EV as: "Does this action capture more pot share than alternative actions?"

Pot Odds & Required Win%

Required Win% = Risk / (Risk + Reward)

Compare your hand's equity against the required win% from pot odds. Use the rule of 2 (one card to come: outs × 2 ≈ %) and rule of 4 (two cards to come: outs × 4 ≈ %). When pot odds % < equity %, calling is +EV.

Fold Equity (FE)

Total EV = (Fold% × Pot) + (Call% × [(Eq × Total Pot) - Cost])

FE represents extra equity gained from opponent folding. Semibluffs gain value from FE + draw equity. Pure bluffs rely entirely on FE.

Maximally Exploitative Strategy (MES)

MES is the most profitable response to an opponent's fixed strategy. Calculate each hand independently — there are no "loss leader" plays. Every hand is either +EV or not, played accordingly. The value of the game is the aggregate EV of each individual hand.

When to use MES: You have reliable reads on opponent tendencies. When NOT to use MES: Against observant opponents who will counter-adjust (use GTO baseline instead).

Nash Equilibrium / GTO — The Unexploitable Baseline

A Nash Equilibrium is a set of strategies where: (1) each player knows every opponent's exact strategy, (2) all players are maximally exploiting each other simultaneously, (3) no player can unilaterally improve their EV.

Key properties:

• Guaranteed minimum EV — playing GTO means you will either break even or profit regardless of opponent
• Strictly dominated strategies cannot be part of equilibrium
• Mixed strategies occur ONLY when multiple actions have identical EV
• GTO strategies don't adapt to specific opponents — they focus on solid play

Use GTO when: Facing tough/unknown opponents. Want a baseline. Use exploitative adjustments when: You've identified specific opponent leaks.

The Indifference Principle

If a player plays a mixed strategy at equilibrium, all actions taken with nonzero frequency have the same EV. This tells us about the opponent's strategy: they are playing in such a way as to make you indifferent. At equilibrium, the bottom of your range breaks even — your opponent's defense frequency makes your worst bluff 0EV.

Minimum Defense Frequency (MDF)

MDF = Pot / (Pot + Bet)

The frequency you must defend to prevent opponent from auto-profiting with any two cards. If you defend less than MDF, opponent can profitably bluff with ATC. MDF is a baseline, not a rigid rule — adjust based on opponent tendencies.

Think of MDF as: "How often must I continue so my opponent's worst bluff breaks even?"

The Clairvoyance Toy Game

Models optimal river bet-sizing with polarized vs condensed ranges:

• Polarized range (nuts + air) vs bluff-catcher → optimal bet is ALL-IN
• Depolarized/merged range vs bluff-catcher → optimal bet is 0 (always check)

This explains why you bet big with polarized ranges and check with merged ranges.

Counter Exploitation Cycle

The iterative process: Villain plays strategy A → You play MES vs A → Villain adjusts to B → You adjust to C → ... The cycle converges to Nash Equilibrium. Each iteration improves EV against the previous, but leaves you vulnerable to further counter-adjustment.

Equity Realization (EqR)

EqR = the fraction of raw equity that materializes into EV. Hands over-realize equity when they can bet/raise and force folds. Hands under-realize equity when they must fold to pressure or face reverse implied odds. Position, playability, and stack depth all affect EqR.

Tournament Concepts

ICM (Independent Chip Model): Assigns monetary value to chip stacks based on equity share of remaining prize pool. Tends to overvalue short stacks. Use for final table deal-making.

Risk Premium: Additional equity needed to call in tournaments because chips lost are worth more than chips won (survival value). Risk premium increases near pay jumps and final table.
