Jean Piaget's constructivism is the theoretical base for roughly half of modern educational practice — the half that says learners build understanding actively rather than absorbing it passively. Paired with schema theory from the 1970s information-processing tradition, constructivism gives curriculum designers a vocabulary for how new knowledge gets attached to old. This skill covers the working tools: the assimilation/accommodation loop, the four developmental stages (as descriptive scaffolding, not as rigid gates), schema-based reading and problem-solving, and the important distinction between "the learner is too young" and "the learner has the wrong schema."

1. The Assimilation / Accommodation Loop
Piaget's central insight: learners have mental structures (schemas) that organize their experience, and new experience is handled by one of two mechanisms.
Assimilation. The new experience is incorporated into an existing schema without changing the schema. A child who has a "dog" schema meets a new dog and simply adds it: that's a dog.
Accommodation. The new experience does not fit any existing schema, so a schema must be restructured. A child who has a "dog" schema meets a cat and, after some confusion, creates or refines a schema distinguishing the two. The dog schema shrinks to cover only dogs; a cat schema appears.
Equilibration. The back-and-forth between assimilation and accommodation reaches a stable state when the learner's schemas accurately predict the world. Learning is driven by disequilibrium — moments when the existing schema breaks down and accommodation is needed. Comfortable equilibrium is where nothing new is learned.
Teaching that stays in pure assimilation looks like endless review: students handle everything with the schemas they already have. Teaching that skips accommodation looks like confusion: students are given something the existing schema cannot absorb and are not helped to restructure. Good teaching engineers disequilibrium at the edge of what the learner can restructure and then supports the restructuring.
2. The Four Stages
Piaget described four stages of cognitive development with approximate ages. These should be read as typical descriptions, not rigid gates. Modern research has found substantial domain and individual variation — a child may reason at Concrete Operational level in arithmetic and still at Preoperational level in physics.
Sensorimotor (0 to ~2 years)
Knowledge is built through physical action and perception. The major achievement is object permanence — understanding that objects continue to exist when out of sight. Before permanence, an object hidden under a cloth has "ceased to exist" for the infant.
Preoperational (~2 to ~7 years)
Symbolic thought and language appear. The child can represent things with words, images, and pretend play. Limitations: egocentrism (difficulty taking another's visual perspective), centration (fixating on one feature while ignoring others), and failure of conservation — not yet understanding that quantity is preserved under transformation.
The conservation of number task is canonical: two rows of coins, identical in number, are shown to be the same. Then one row is spread out so it is longer. The Preoperational child usually says the spread-out row "has more." The child has centered on length and ignored number.
Concrete Operational (~7 to ~11 years)
The child can perform mental operations on concrete objects: conservation passes, classification and seriation become reliable, reversibility is understood. The limitation is abstraction — reasoning about hypotheticals, variables, and systems of systems is still hard.
Formal Operational (~12 and up)
Abstract and hypothetical reasoning become available. The learner can reason about propositions, control variables mentally, and engage with systems of variables. This stage is now considered less universal than Piaget proposed — not all adults reach full formal operations in all domains, and domain-specific expertise matters far more than a blanket stage.
Caveat
Piaget's stages are descriptive, not prescriptive. Using them as age-gating ("this student is 6, so they cannot do X") is a misreading. Use them instead as a checklist of cognitive tools the learner may or may not have developed in this domain, and scaffold accordingly.
3. Schema Theory for Reading and Problem Solving
Information-processing psychologists in the 1970s (Rumelhart, Anderson, Bransford) extended Piaget's schema idea into reading comprehension and expert problem-solving. The core claim: new material is understood only to the extent that it connects to existing schemas.
The Bransford-Johnson passage
Bransford and Johnson (1972) gave readers a passage about "washing" that described a procedure: separate items into groups, use not too much at once, different amounts matter, and so on. Readers who were told the passage was about laundry recalled far more than readers given no title — the title activated a schema that made the otherwise ambiguous passage coherent.
The lesson: comprehension is not extraction from the text. It is pattern-matching of text to schema. If the reader has no schema, the text is incomprehensible no matter how clearly it is written. A textbook that drops unfamiliar terminology without scaffolding fails this test.

Advance organizers (Ausubel, 1960) are the oldest and most studied of these; meta-analyses find them consistently helpful, especially when the new material is abstract.
4. Expert vs. Novice Schemas
Experts have schemas that chunk domain material far more efficiently than novices. Chase and Simon's chess studies (1973) showed that expert chess players reconstructed middle-game positions from a 5-second exposure with near-perfect accuracy, while novices could only reconstruct a few pieces. On random, non-game positions, experts did no better than novices — the advantage came from pattern-matching against thousands of studied games, not from raw visual memory.
Implication for teaching: the goal is to build schemas that experts use, not merely to stack facts. Worked examples, contrasting cases, and explicit schema labeling (for instance: "this is a rate problem" or "this is a conservation argument") accelerate schema formation. 5. Misconceptions as Schemas
Students do not arrive without schemas — they arrive with schemas that may be incompatible with the target material. These are often called misconceptions or preconceptions. Common physics examples:
- "Heavy objects fall faster." (Schema: weight correlates with speed.)
- "Summer happens because the Earth is closer to the Sun." (Schema: proximity explains temperature.)
- "If there is no force, an object will slow down." (Schema: motion requires push.)
Each is a coherent schema that worked in daily life and produced correct-seeming predictions. Teaching that ignores these schemas and just states the correct rule typically fails: students add the correct rule as a phrase they can recite on tests while continuing to use the original schema for actual reasoning. Effective teaching requires explicit confrontation of the old schema — show where it fails, then build the new one (Chi, 2008, conceptual change).
6. Worked Curriculum — Teaching "Density" to 10-year-olds
Target: Students explain and predict whether an object will float, using density.
Diagnosis
Age maps to Concrete Operational. Abstraction (density as mass per volume) is near the edge — possible, but needs concrete scaffolding.
Prior schemas likely in play
- "Heavy things sink." (Weight-only schema.)
- "Metal sinks, wood floats." (Material-only schema.)
Sequence
- Confront old schema. Display two objects of similar weight: a lead sinker and a block of foam. Students predict. Most say "both sink, they're the same weight." Drop in water. Foam floats.
- Show the anomaly cannot be explained by weight. Disequilibrium engineered.
- Introduce a new variable. Display two objects of similar volume but different mass. Students observe floating behavior flips.
- Name the schema. "What matters is how much stuff is packed into the space. We call that density."
- Worked example. Compute density for a regular block (mass 120 g, volume 40 cm^3, density 3 g/cm^3). Water has density 1 g/cm^3. If the object's density exceeds 1, it sinks.
- Assimilation practice. Give students several objects to measure and predict.
- Accommodation practice. Introduce a boat (steel, but floats). Students must refine the schema: it is average density of the object plus displaced water that determines floating. (Concrete Operational upper edge — worth attempting, drop if stuck.)
The lesson is built as a chain of engineered disequilibria, each followed by a schema refinement.
