Reorder

Realign a drifted listing into a logical order under one stated principle, moving items and rewording nothing. Use on a catalog, index, table of contents, enum, or menu whose order has gone arbitrary, or when the user says "reorder this" or "put this in a sensible order". The principle is stated before the first move. Content edits belong to debloat or unslop.

Reorder

Put a listing back into an order that carries meaning, moving items only.

Method

  1. Pin the listing. Identify the ordered set in focus.
  2. Name one principle. Workflow sequence, dependency, grouping by kind, severity, frequency, or alphabetical. If the set already has a latent order, surface and finish it rather than imposing a new one.
  3. Cluster kin, then sequence. Keep related items adjacent, then order the clusters by that one principle. Do not blend incompatible sorts.
  4. Move in place. Reword nothing, add nothing, remove nothing. See ../clean-and-true/references/idioms.md for edit safety. If the same set is mirrored elsewhere, apply the identical order to each.
  5. Respect a deliberate order. If the current sequence already encodes a real principle, complete it rather than replacing it.

Completion

A reader can name the ordering principle from the result. Every item that was there is still there, only repositioned. Kin are adjacent. Mirrored copies carry the identical order. A pass that finds nothing to genuinely improve changes nothing.
