Professional vocal recording techniques.
Overview
Vocal recording is a critical skill in music production, requiring careful attention to microphone selection, placement, acoustic environment, and signal chain. Professional vocal recording involves understanding microphone types and polar patterns, optimizing room acoustics, proper gain staging, and addressing common issues like plosives, sibilance, and room reflections.
This skill covers techniques from close-miking for intimacy to distant placement for natural room tone, microphone selection based on voice characteristics, acoustic treatment strategies, and best practices for capturing clean, professional vocal performances across genres.
Core Concepts
Microphone Placement Techniques
Frontal Close Mic (2-6 inches) — Intimate sound, good consonant articulation, proximity warmth; requires pop filter
Frontal Loose Mic (12 inches) — Natural room tone, reduced de-essing needs, unique depth
Top Head Placement — Reduces plosives and sibilance for breathy performers; requires clear off-axis response
Lower Chest Placement — Natural diaphragmatic warmth, full-bodied sound, reduces nasal tones
Off-Axis Recording (15-30 degrees) — Reduces sibilance while maintaining clarity
Microphone Types
Dynamic Microphones — Durable, high SPL tolerance, midrange emphasis, less sensitive to room acoustics (Shure SM57/SM58)
Condenser Microphones — Greater sensitivity, wider frequency response, requires phantom power; large-diaphragm for silky highs, small-diaphragm for transients
Ribbon Microphones — Warm, natural, flat sound; delicate; excellent for bright sources
Polar Patterns
Cardioid — Captures front, minimizes sides/rear; susceptible to proximity effect and plosives
Omnidirectional — Captures all directions; immune to proximity effect, resistant to plosives
Figure 8 (Bidirectional) — Captures front and rear, rejects sides
Professional Workflows
Studio Setup and Acoustic Treatment
Room Selection — Choose quiet room with soft furnishings, carpets, curtains; avoid hard reflective surfaces
Absorption — Control primary reflections, especially wall behind microphone; use absorptive surfaces, open closets with clothes
Noise Reduction — Turn off appliances, air conditioners; close windows/doors; use airplane mode on phones
Gain Staging — Maintain peaks between -12 and -6 dBFS for sufficient resolution and headroom
Recording Workflow
- Microphone Selection — Choose based on voice characteristics and desired sound
- Placement — Position microphone at appropriate distance and angle
- Pop Filter Setup — Place between singer and microphone
- Headphone Mix — Create comfortable monitor mix for performer
- Gain Setting — Set levels based on loudest passages with 3-6 dB headroom
- Test Recording — Record short section to check levels and sound
- Multiple Takes — Record several complete takes for comping
- Comping — Combine best parts of multiple takes
