Paper Novelty Design (paper-novelty-design-release)
A structured thinking framework and engineering tool for designing, deepening, and stress-testing academic research novelty before committing to experimental work or writing.
1. The Four Archetypes of Scientific Novelty
Avoid the "A + B" incremental trap (e.g., merely taking an existing model A and running it on dataset B). Target higher quadrants:
Problem Formulation
Old New
┌──────────────┬──────────────┐
New │ Quadrant 2 │ Quadrant 1 │
│ Method Shift │ Paradigm New │
Method ├──────────────┼──────────────┤
│ Quadrant 4 │ Quadrant 3 │
Old │ Incremental │ Application │
│ (High Risk) │ Discovery │
└──────────────┴──────────────┘
- Quadrant 1 (Paradigm Novelty): New theoretical formulation + new method (rare, foundational).
- Quadrant 2 (Methodological Mechanism Shift): Overcoming a long-standing deadlock in an established problem via a fundamentally distinct physical or mathematical mechanism.
- Quadrant 3 (Domain Discovery): Bringing a mature methodology to a domain where its assumptions were previously considered invalid, proving new boundary conditions.
- Quadrant 4 (Incremental): Danger zone. Must be upgraded by introducing theoretical guarantees, physical invariants, or order-of-magnitude efficiency breakthroughs.
2. The 5-Step Novelty Deepening Protocol
- Deadlock Clarification:
- What has the community failed to achieve for the past 5-10 years? Why did existing paradigms plateau?
- Key Insight / Counter-Intuitive Principle:
- What non-obvious intuition or hypothesis underpins your solution?
- Ablation-Defensible Separation:
- If we remove your proposed module, does the entire performance gain collapse?
- Anti-Collision Prior Art Check:
- Has a similar mechanism already been published in adjacent venues (e.g., CVPR, NeurIPS, Acta Materialia)?
- Three-Tier Contribution Framing:
- Contribution 1: Theoretical / Conceptual Insight.
- Contribution 2: Methodological / Algorithmic Architecture.
- Contribution 3: Comprehensive Empirical Benchmark & Open-Source Asset.
