This is general wellness information, not medical diagnosis or treatment. Consult a licensed healthcare professional for habits tied to a medical or mental-health condition (addiction, compulsive behavior, disordered eating).
When to use
Use this when someone wants to build (or break) a wellness habit — movement, hydration, journaling, meditation, screen limits — and can name the behavior and roughly when it should happen.
Not for: substance-use disorders, self-harm behaviors, or compulsions requiring clinical treatment — refer to a professional.
Method
- Define the target behavior in one specific, tiny sentence (not "exercise more" but "do 5 push-ups after brushing teeth").
- Anchor a cue. Decision point: prefer habit-stacking onto an existing routine ("after , I will ") over vague time-based cues.
- Shrink the routine until it feels almost too easy — the goal is consistency first, scale later.
- Attach a reward: something immediate and satisfying (a checkmark, a track, a small treat) so the loop closes.
- Reduce friction for good habits (lay out gear, pre-fill the bottle); add friction for bad ones (remove the app, put the snack away).
- Decision point: if you miss a day, apply the "never miss twice" rule — resume immediately rather than restarting from zero.
- Track with a simple streak/checkbox and review weekly; once consistent for ~2-4 weeks, increase difficulty by one small step.
Example
Goal: drink more water. Behavior: "after pouring morning coffee, fill a 1L bottle and put it on my desk." Cue: coffee (existing). Routine: fill bottle. Reward: tick a habit tracker. Friction cut: bottle stored by the coffee machine. Miss rule: never miss twice. Review Sundays; scale to 2L when 14-day streak hits.
Pitfalls
- Starting too big; motivation fades and the streak dies in week one.
- Vague cues ("sometime in the evening") that never reliably trigger.
- No reward, so the brain never reinforces the loop.
- Treating one missed day as total failure and quitting, instead of resuming next day.
