When to use
Use this when you need a structured month of content that ladders up to real goals across channels, instead of ad hoc posting.
Not for: a single asset (use mkt-draft-content), a time-boxed promotional push (use mkt-campaign-plan), or multi-step email flows (use mkt-email-sequence).
Method
- Anchor to goals. Confirm the month's primary objective (awareness, engagement, leads, launch support) and fixed dates (launches, events, holidays, promos). Fill gaps with labeled assumptions.
- Confirm channels and a realistic cadence per channel (blog weekly, LinkedIn 3x/week, email 2x/week). Decision point: set cadence to capacity — do not over-commit.
- Set themes. Define 3-4 content pillars tied to audience interests and the objective, ensuring a mix of top, mid, and bottom funnel.
- Ideate. Generate a specific title/angle for every slot; avoid repetition and balance formats (how-to, story, data, promo, UGC, thought leadership).
- Sequence. Place items so pacing is even, key dates are supported, and no channel goes dark.
- Add production notes: format, owner placeholder, primary CTA, and repurposing links between assets.
- Attach a lightweight measurement plan per pillar.
Example
Objective: launch support for a v2 release on the 15th. Pillars: "what's new" (bottom), "how teams use it" (mid), "industry POV" (top), "behind the build" (engagement). Cadence: blog weekly, LinkedIn 3x/week, email 2x/week. The 15th anchors a blog + email + 3 posts; the week prior teases, the week after amplifies user stories. One flagship blog gets repurposed into 3 LinkedIn posts and one email.
Pitfalls
- Planning more volume than the team can produce, so the calendar dies by week two.
- All content at one funnel stage (usually top) with nothing that converts.
- Generic slot labels ("blog post") instead of a specific title/angle you could brief today.
- Leaving a channel dark for a week, or clustering everything on launch day.
