Application Question Response Guidelines

Common questions and approach:

"Why do you want to work here?"

Structure:

1. Mission resonance (1-2 sentences) - Connect personal values to company mission
2. Technical excitement (1-2 sentences) - Specific interest in their technical challenges
3. Experience alignment (1-2 sentences) - How your background uniquely positions you to contribute

Tone: Genuine, specific, technical. Avoid generic statements.

Example for climate tech:

"I'm deeply committed to working on climate solutions, and [Company]'s approach to [specific problem] resonates with me. At QuitCarbon, I saw firsthand how technical execution can accelerate decarbonization. "Tell us about an achievement you are proud of"

Structure:

1. Context (1 sentence) - What was the situation/challenge?
2. Action (2-3 sentences) - What did you do? Focus on technical approach and leadership
3. Impact (1-2 sentences) - What was the result? Technical and business impact

Tone: Concrete, technical, impact-focused. No bragging about metrics unless specifically asked.

Example:

"At Gremlin, we faced a critical challenge: how do you quantify the value of failures that didn't happen? I led the architecture of our reliability scoring system, designing a distributed event processing pipeline that correlated chaos experiments with production incidents. "What are your salary expectations?"

Approach:

• For IC roles: Research market rate for Staff+ in that geo/industry
• Climate tech typically pays 10-20% below big tech
• Be flexible but know your floor
• Standard range: $180K-$220K base for Staff Engineer at climate tech companies

Cover Letter Guidelines

Purpose: Every job application should include a tailored cover letter that demonstrates genuine interest and technical fit.

Length: 250-350 words (3-4 paragraphs)

Tone: Professional but conversational, specific to the role and company, shows research and genuine interest

Structure

Paragraph 1: Opening and Mission Alignment (2-3 sentences)

What to Avoid

Learned Rules

Submitting Through an Automated Browser

Verified 2026-09-01 across four platforms in one session. The ATS decides whether automation can finish the job, so check the platform before staging.

• Ashby rejects automated submissions as "possible spam." GridCARE's form was filled correctly, both toggles set, resume and cover letter attached, and submit returned "Your application submission was flagged as possible spam." Twice, on two independent attempts. The identical staged form went through immediately when Forni pressed submit himself in the same browser, so the detection is on the automation, not the content. Stage the form completely, then hand it to Forni to submit. Do not retry: the second attempt fails the same way and risks the IP. Drop any generated cover letter somewhere he can actually reach, ~/Downloads named YYYY-MM Cover Letter - <Company>.pdf, not a session scratchpad.
• Greenhouse gates automated submissions behind an emailed security code. The first submit returns "A verification code was sent to . To submit your application, enter the 8-character code." Form state survives the round trip. Read the code out of the mailbox with gws, type it with keyboard type rather than fill (the input is eight single character boxes and fill writes only the first), then submit again. Dragos landed this way.
• Wellfound and Fillout accept fully automated submissions and confirm immediately. No gate, no code.

Reading a Posting Before Drafting

• Read the whole posting body before writing anything. Two roles on the 2026-09-01 slate had disqualifying facts that were invisible from the board listing and the structured fields: EnergyHub's Principal Data Engineer requires Python and SQL, and GridCARE is hybrid three days a week in Redwood City despite its API reporting isRemote: true. Both were found by reading the posting, and both changed the decision.
• Say the gap out loud rather than papering over it. The elevAID note stated the missing FHIR, HL7, and TEFCA background plainly, and the GridCARE letter opened with the location problem instead of burying it. A gap the reader will find in the first screen is better named by the candidate.
