n8n-workflow-patterns
Proven architectural patterns for building n8n workflows instead of improvising node graphs from scratch.
Overview
Use this skill when:
- Designing a new n8n workflow
- Choosing between webhook, scheduled, batch, or queue-based automation
- Connecting APIs, databases, or AI steps in a maintainable way
- Refactoring a fragile workflow that has grown without structure
Workflow
- Define the trigger model: webhook, schedule, manual, or upstream event.
- Identify the workflow shape: linear, fan-out, batch, loop, approval, or retry-driven.
- Separate orchestration from business logic so complex transforms are isolated.
- Add idempotency, retries, backoff, and dead-letter handling before production rollout.
- Make state and handoffs explicit using structured payloads and durable storage where needed.
- Validate with realistic sample inputs and failure cases.
Common Patterns
Webhook intake
- Validate payload shape immediately
- Normalize fields into a stable internal schema
- Return fast, then hand off long-running work asynchronously if possible
API integration
- Isolate authentication and pagination concerns
- Add rate-limit handling and retries around HTTP nodes
- Persist checkpoints for resumable sync jobs
Batch processing
- Chunk large lists into bounded units
- Track partial failures separately from full-job status
- Emit a final summary with counts, failures, and retry candidates
AI-enabled workflows
- Keep prompts versioned and explicit
- Save model inputs and outputs for debugging
- Add deterministic fallbacks for validation and routing
Guardrails
- Do not hide critical branching logic inside ad hoc expressions
- Avoid giant single-workflow designs when sub-workflows improve clarity
- Prefer explicit error paths over silent continue-on-fail behavior
- Treat external side effects as non-idempotent unless proven otherwise
Examples
Lead intake workflow
- Webhook trigger
- Normalize CRM fields
- Deduplicate by email
- Enrich with third-party API
- Route qualified leads to sales
Scheduled sync workflow
- Cron trigger
- Fetch changed records since last checkpoint
- Process in pages
- Retry transient failures
- Save next sync cursor
