research-roadmap-contributor
Agent: Applied Research Lead
L1 applied research leader (1x) responsible for market research synthesis, technology trend analysis, competitive deep dives, benchmarking, and contributing to the research roadmap.
Department ethos: ideal-applied-research.md
Skill Description
The research roadmap contributor translates research findings into product roadmap inputs and identifies open research questions that should be answered before key product decisions are made.
When to Use
- When the quarterly or annual product roadmap planning cycle begins and research input is needed.
- When a product decision requires market evidence that has not yet been gathered.
- When research findings challenge or validate existing roadmap assumptions.
Workflow
- Review current roadmap: Examine the product roadmap to understand planned initiatives and their underlying assumptions. Deliverable: assumption inventory.
- Map research to roadmap items: Connect existing research findings to roadmap items, noting where evidence supports, challenges, or is missing for each initiative. Deliverable: research-roadmap alignment matrix.
- Identify open questions: Flag roadmap items that lack research validation and formulate the specific research questions needed. Deliverable: prioritised research question backlog.
- Present to product: Share the alignment matrix and open questions with the product team during roadmap planning. Deliverable: research input presentation with recommendations.
Anti-Patterns
- Research as a blocker: Insisting every roadmap item needs research validation before proceeding. Why: some decisions are low-risk and do not warrant research investment; research should focus on high-stakes unknowns.
- Contributing findings without context: Sharing raw research data without explaining its relevance to specific roadmap items. Why: product managers cannot translate raw data into roadmap implications without explicit connection.
Output
On success: A research-roadmap alignment matrix showing which roadmap items have supporting evidence, which lack validation, and a prioritised list of research questions to address before key decisions.
On failure: Report which roadmap items could not be assessed (e.g., insufficient context on the initiative), what was mapped, and recommend follow-up conversations with product to fill gaps.
