Agent Governance
Autonomous agents need defense in depth: policy enforcement before tool execution, audit trails after every action, and human approval before high-impact decisions.
The Problem
Financial agents read adversarial documents, browse the web, write code, and may influence allocation decisions. Prompt instructions alone cannot stop tool misuse, data exfiltration, stale evidence, or overconfident recommendations. Governance has to be implemented as a control plane around the agent, not as a paragraph in the system prompt.

Control Layers
- Policy - allowlists, sandbox paths, domain restrictions, action tiers
- Warden proxy - intercept every tool call before execution
- Evidence hygiene - classify untrusted text and strip instructions from retrieved content
- Approval gates - require humans for live orders, deployments, credential changes
- Auditability - immutable log of prompts, tools, policy decisions, and artifacts
Guardrails
- Prompt-only safety - the model cannot enforce its own permissions
- Untrusted instructions - retrieved documents are evidence, never commands
- Silent high-impact actions - trading, deployment, and secret access need approval
- No kill path - agents need explicit stop conditions and escalation rules
- Pattern-matched shell - blocklists on command text are bypassed, not enforced
