Household Constitution

Every household already has a constitution — unwritten, inconsistently enforced, and amended by whoever is loudest that evening. The arguments repeat because the rules were never actually agreed: they were announced (parents), assumed (flatmates), or inherited from a household that no longer exists. Writing them down together changes the physics. A teenager who negotiated the screen rule follows a different rule than one who received it; a flatmate who proposed the guest policy cannot be shocked by it. This skill runs the drafting: everyone proposes, everything gets argued once properly instead of weekly forever, consequences are chosen while everyone is calm, and an amendment clause makes the document alive — because a constitution that cannot change just becomes the new thing to ignore.

What This Skill Produces

• The negotiation session plan — who proposes what, in what order, and the rules of the drafting meeting itself (everyone writes before anyone speaks)
• The constitution — 8–15 plain-language articles across the real domains: screens, chores, money, guests, noise/quiet, shared spaces, food, privacy
• The consequence menu — agreed in advance, proportionate, and applying to everyone the article covers, adults included
• The amendment and review procedure — how a rule gets changed instead of broken, and the scheduled review that keeps it honest
• The signing ritual — slightly ceremonial on purpose, because the ceremony is what children and flatmates alike remember agreeing at

Required Inputs

Ask for these if not provided:

• The household — who lives there, ages where relevant, and the power realities (parents and kids is a different negotiation than four equal flatmates — the skill adjusts which rules are negotiable versus consultable)
• The recurring arguments — the actual top five, verbatim if possible; the constitution is built from the real conflicts, not a template of imagined ones
• The non-negotiables — what the adults (or the lease) genuinely cannot compromise on, declared as non-negotiable up front rather than fake-negotiated
• Past attempts — the chore wheel that died, the screen rule that lasted a week, and why, honestly
• The tone the household can sustain — some houses want articles named with jokes; some want it straight; the document should sound like the people

Framework: Everyone Drafts, Argue Once, Consequences Before Breaches

1. Separate the negotiable from the consultable, out loud. Faking negotiation over a safety rule teaches everyone the whole process is theatre. Parents state the few genuine non-negotiables first; everything else is really on the table — and the surprise of the exercise is how short the first list gets.
2. Everyone writes proposals before anyone speaks. Each person drafts the rules they want — including the kids' rules for the parents (phone at dinner cuts both ways) and the quiet flatmate's noise clause. Silent drafting first prevents the loudest voice writing the constitution, which is the disease this cures.
3. Argue each article once, properly. The drafting meeting is where the screen argument finally happens in full — with everyone's actual reasons — instead of in weekly fragments. The rule that emerges is usually stricter than the kids proposed and looser than the parents imagined, and it holds because the argument was had.
4. Choose consequences while calm, apply them without ceremony. A consequence chosen in advance by the person who later breaks the rule is discipline without drama: "we agreed" is a different sentence than "I've decided." Menu principles: proportionate, immediate-ish, related to the breach where possible, and symmetrical — the adults' articles have consequences too, and this is the clause that buys the whole document its legitimacy.
5. Write the amendment clause before the first breach. Anyone may propose an amendment at review; rules can be changed but not ignored. This converts rule-breaking pressure into rule-changing pressure, which is the entire constitutional trick.
6. Review on a schedule, not after explosions. Monthly at first, then quarterly: which articles are working, which are dead letters (delete them honestly — a document with ignored articles rots entirely), what needs amending as ages and lives change.
7. Sign it and post it. Names, date, a copy on the fridge or the group chat pin. The mild ceremony is doing real work: it marks the moment everyone chose it.

Quality Checks

• Non-negotiables were declared, not fake-negotiated
• Every household member drafted proposals before discussion, including rules for the adults
• Each article records a rule someone could quote, not a value statement
• Consequences were agreed before any breach and apply symmetrically
• The amendment clause exists and is easier to use than ignoring a rule
• A review date is set at signing

Anti-Patterns

• The announced constitution. Rules delivered from above are just the old regime with paperwork; the drafting is the product.
• Fake-negotiating the non-negotiable. One discovered sham poisons every real negotiation in the document.
• Vague articles. "Be respectful about noise" restarts the argument; "quiet after 10:30 on school nights" ends it.
• Asymmetric consequences. A document where only children face consequences is a chore chart cosplaying as a constitution, and teenagers price it accordingly.
• Keeping dead letters. Every ignored article teaches that the document is optional; delete or amend, never quietly abandon.
• Solemnity overdose. It should be a little fun. Households that laugh at their own Article 7 keep the constitution; households embarrassed by the whole exercise frame it and forget it.
