- Present the gate artifact to the user in a clear summary
- Ask the user whether to proceed, revise, or go back to an earlier phase
- Never auto-advance past a gate without explicit user confirmation

Invariant Amendments
Invariant changes are the highest-impact events in the RDD cycle. They can invalidate work from any prior phase.
- When detected: pause the current phase, run backward propagation (sweep all prior ADRs and essays for contradictions, add supersession notes, update the domain model's Amendment Log), then resume after propagation is complete.
- Cost calculus: the cost of propagation now is far less than the cost of stale assumptions propagating into code later. A 10-minute sweep prevents hours of debugging dead ideas in future sessions.
- Who triggers it:
/rdd-modelStep 3.5 detects amendments;/rdd-decideStep 3.7 executes backward propagation. But any phase that discovers an invariant contradiction should flag it for propagation.
IMPORTANT PRINCIPLES
- User controls the workflow: Always present options and let the user decide. Never auto-advance past a gate without confirmation.
- Research produces writing, not just notes: The essay artifact distinguishes this from typical dev workflows. If you can't write it clearly, you don't understand it.
- Domain vocabulary is the connective tissue: The glossary from
/rdd-modelthreads through every later artifact. Inconsistent naming signals incomplete understanding. - Stop at uncertainty: If a decision or scenario depends on something unknown, go back to
/rdd-researchand investigate. Don't speculate past what's known. - Don't repeat work: Pass relevant findings forward between skills. If
/rdd-researchalready surfaced a tradeoff,/rdd-decideshould reference it, not rediscover it. - ADRs are source of truth: Code that contradicts accepted ADRs is structural debt. Resolve it before building on top of it.
- Invariants decay with distance: LLMs lose coherence across many documents. The invariants section is the short, authoritative statement that prevents this. Keep it concise. Read it first. Trust it over longer documents when they conflict.
- Track state: The user should always know where they are in the pipeline and what's left.
