UK Train Goat — Printing Press CLI

Prerequisites: Install the CLI

This skill drives the uk-train-goat-pp-cli binary. You must verify the CLI is installed before invoking any command from this skill. If it is missing, install it first:

1. Install via the Printing Press installer:

   npx -y @mvanhorn/printing-press-library install uk-train-goat --cli-only
   

2. Verify: uk-train-goat-pp-cli --version
3. Ensure $GOPATH/bin (or $HOME/go/bin) is on $PATH.

If the npx install fails (no Node, offline, etc.), fall back to a direct Go install (requires Go 1.26.6 or newer):

If --version reports "command not found" after install, the install step did not put the binary on $PATH. Do not proceed with skill commands until verification succeeds.

uk-train-goat wraps the free National Rail OpenLDBWS API with a Cobra command tree, an MCP server, and an offline station database. Live departures, arrivals, journey planning A->B, and service status all run from one terminal command and ship with a programmatic eval grader that pins tool descriptions for LLM agents.

When to Use This CLI

Use uk-train-goat for any UK National Rail question an agent or terminal user has: live departures, live arrivals, journey planning between two stations on today or a future date, service-status / delay-reason lookups, and walk-up adult fare lookups between stations. The local SQLite store gives every command offline CRS resolution and supports saved-commute features (go, saved status, recent) that a thin API wrapper cannot. Do not use uk-train-goat for booking, fare comparisons against Trainline, advance fares, railcard discounts, EU/Eurostar trains, or real-time push notifications; those are explicit non-goals for v0.1.

When Not to Use This CLI

Do not activate this CLI for requests that require creating, updating, deleting, publishing, commenting, upvoting, inviting, ordering, sending messages, booking, purchasing, or changing remote state. This printed CLI exposes read-only commands for inspection, export, sync, and analysis.

Local state that compounds

• go — Run a saved commute in one keystroke; resolves origin, destination, and time-window from the local store.

  Pick this when an agent needs the user's named recurring route resolved from local state, not a fresh A->B planning call.

• stations — FTS5 search over the local UK CRS code table; resolves Paddington -> PAD with no network call.

  Pick this whenever the user names a station in prose; resolve to CRS once, then call any other uk-train-goat command.

Fares (walk-up, RJFAF feed)

• fare <from-crs> <to-crs> — Looks up walk-up adult fares between two stations from the official National Rail RJFAF static fares feed stored locally. Returns results sorted by price, with ticket name, route code, restriction description, and single/return flag. Requires fare sync to have been run first.

  Pick this when the user asks what a walk-up ticket costs between two stations; not for advance or railcard-discounted fares.

• fare sync — Downloads and loads the RJFAF fares feed from National Rail Open Data into the local SQLite store. Requires NR_OPENDATA_USERNAME and NR_OPENDATA_PASSWORD. Re-run when fares data is stale (feed has a 35-day freshness backstop).

  Run once before using fare; re-run when the freshness warning appears.

Command Reference

status — Internal placeholder resource. Real commands are hand-authored against the OpenLDBWS wrapper.

• uk-train-goat-pp-cli status — Placeholder; deleted post-generate. Real CLI commands live in internal/cli/board.go etc.

Finding the right command

When you know what you want to do but not which command does it, ask the CLI directly:

which resolves a natural-language capability query to the best matching command from this CLI's curated feature index. Exit code 0 means at least one match; exit code 2 means no confident match — fall back to --help or use a narrower query.

Daily morning commute check

Multi-origin fan-out + dotted-path field selection; tight payload for an LLM context window. --in / --within accept human-readable durations (30m, 1h).

Why is my train late

Surfaces one service's scheduled vs expected times, platform, operator, and calling points, with a plain-prose status line (on time, running late, or cancelled). The delay-reason text and NRCC operator alerts (including strike notices) live on the live board, not the service-detail payload. See board/arrivals, where messages[] carries the alert banners and delay_reason carries the cause.

Iterative trip planning

CI eval gate

Runs the agent eval suite (set EVAL_AGENT_MODEL=claude-sonnet-4-6 in your environment first; exits non-zero if pass rate drops below 80%).

Auth Setup

Run uk-train-goat-pp-cli auth setup to print the URL and steps for getting a key (add --launch to open the URL). Then set:

For fares commands (fare, fare sync), also set your National Rail Open Data credentials:

Register at nationalrail.co.uk/developers. These credentials are only required for fare sync; fare <from> <to> reads from the local store and only needs them if the freshness probe triggers a re-sync.

Agent Mode

Add --agent to any command. Expands to: --json --compact --no-input --no-color --yes.

• Pipeable — JSON on stdout, errors on stderr

• Filterable — --select keeps a subset of fields. Dotted paths descend into nested structures; arrays traverse element-wise. Critical for keeping context small on verbose APIs:

• Offline-friendly — sync/search commands can use the local SQLite store when available

• Non-interactive — never prompts, every input is a flag

Response envelope

Commands that read from the local store or the API wrap output in a provenance envelope:

Parse .results for data and .meta.source to know whether it's live or local. A human-readable N results (live) summary is printed to stderr only when stdout is a terminal AND no machine-format flag (--json, --csv, --compact, --quiet, --plain, --select) is set — piped/agent consumers and explicit-format runs get pure JSON on stdout.

Agent Feedback

When you (or the agent) notice something off about this CLI, record it:

Entries are stored locally at ~/.local/share/uk-train-goat-pp-cli/feedback.jsonl. They are never POSTed unless UK_TRAIN_GOAT_FEEDBACK_ENDPOINT is set AND either --send is passed or UK_TRAIN_GOAT_FEEDBACK_AUTO_SEND=true. Default behavior is local-only.

Write what surprised you, not a bug report. Short, specific, one line: that is the part that compounds.

Output Delivery

Every command accepts --deliver <sink>. The output goes to the named sink in addition to (or instead of) stdout, so agents can route command results without hand-piping. Three sinks are supported:

Unknown schemes are refused with a structured error naming the supported set. Webhook failures return non-zero and log the URL + HTTP status on stderr.

Named Profiles

A profile is a saved set of flag values, reused across invocations. Use it when a scheduled agent calls the same command every run with the same configuration - HeyGen's "Beacon" pattern.

Explicit flags always win over profile values; profile values win over defaults. agent-context lists all available profiles under available_profiles so introspecting agents discover them at runtime.

Install the MCP binary from this CLI's published public-library entry or pre-built release, then register it:
