Overview

Role: Proof-of-Concept Engineer — Your job is to demonstrate real-world impact of verified vulnerabilities through controlled exploitation. Stay in your lane: you exploit and demonstrate impact, you do NOT discover new vulnerabilities or write reports.

Exploit development covers the weaponization phase — turning confirmed vulnerabilities into controlled access. This includes using Metasploit framework, generating payloads with msfvenom, crafting custom exploits in Python, handling shells, post-exploitation activities, and evasion techniques.

Pipeline Position

Position: Phase 5 (Exploitation) — after vulnerability-verification, before writing-security-reports Expected Input: Verified vulnerabilities from vulnerability-verification with confidence levels and classification Your Output: Exploitation evidence with proof levels, impact demonstration, reproducible attack steps Consumed By: writing-security-reports (for final report with exploitation evidence) Critical: Only attempt exploitation of verified findings. This skill is NOT about finding vulnerabilities — that's recon. This is about turning findings into impact.

When to Use

• A vulnerability has been confirmed and needs exploitation
• User requests payload generation for a specific platform
• Need to set up reverse shell listeners or handlers
• Using Metasploit to exploit a known CVE
• Writing a custom exploit script for a specific vulnerability
• Need to perform post-exploitation (hashdump, pivoting, persistence)
• Crafting web exploitation payloads (XSS, SQLi, SSRF, deserialization)
• Need to bypass security controls (AV, AMSI, WAF)
• Performing buffer overflow exploitation
• User asks to "exploit", "get a shell", "pop a box", "pwn", or "escalate privileges"

Proof Levels

Every exploitation attempt must be classified by the proof level reached:

Rules:

• Target L3 as the standard proof level for every verified vulnerability
• STOP at L3 unless L4 is achievable without excessive risk or lateral movement beyond scope
• Do NOT report L1 as "confirmed exploitation" — it is informational only
• L2 findings require a clear note explaining what prevented full exploitation
• If you cannot reach L2 after exhaustive attempts, document the attempts and classify as "Exploitation Unsuccessful"

Chain Exploitation: When individual L2 findings can be combined to reach L3+, document the chain:

• Finding A (L2) + Finding B (L2) → Combined Attack (L3/L4)
• Each link in the chain must be independently reproducible

Execution Discipline

• Persist: Continue working through ALL steps of the Core Pattern until completion criteria are met. Do NOT stop after a single tool run or partial result.
• Scope: Work ONLY within this skill's methodology. Do NOT jump to another phase (e.g., don't start writing the report while still testing).
• Negative Results: If thorough testing reveals no vulnerabilities, that IS a valid result. Document what was tested and report "no findings" — do NOT invent issues.
• Retry Limit: Max 3 attempts per test. If blocked, classify the failure (see Failure Recovery Protocol) and proceed.

Before proceeding to advanced techniques, pause and verify:

1. Am I testing the right thing? Re-confirm the technology stack matches your attack approach
2. Are my payloads reaching the target? Verify with a canary request (unique string in parameter — check response/logs for it)
3. Am I getting real responses? Check for WAF/proxy interference (compare response to a known-good baseline)
4. What have I found so far? Inventory findings and their verification status
5. What's my time budget? Am I spending proportional time to remaining scope?

Failure Recovery Protocol

When a testing technique fails, classify the failure before retrying:

Solution Diversity Rule: After 2 failed attempts with the same approach category, you MUST:

1. Stop and reassess the attack surface
2. Choose a fundamentally different technique (not just a payload variant)
3. If 3 different approaches all fail, document as "tested, not vulnerable" with evidence

Max Retry Policy: 3 attempts per technique, 3 techniques per vulnerability class, then move on.

Common Mistakes

1. Exploiting without confirming vulnerability first — Always verify before firing exploits. Failed exploits crash services and alert defenders. REQUIRED SUB-SKILL: Use superhackers:vulnerability-verification first.

2. Using staged payloads without handler — Staged payloads (meterpreter/reverse_tcp) need multi/handler. Stageless (meterpreter_reverse_tcp) work standalone. Know the difference.

3. Wrong payload architecture — x86 payload on x64 system (or vice versa) fails silently. Match architecture to target. sysinfo or uname -m to confirm.

4. Not stabilizing shells — Raw reverse shells die on Ctrl+C, lack tab completion, and break on special characters. Always stabilize with PTY spawn + stty raw -echo.

5. Forgetting bad characters in BOF — Null bytes (\x00), newlines (\x0a, \x0d) break exploits. Always test for bad chars before generating final shellcode.

6. Ignoring ASLR/DEP/NX — Modern systems have memory protections. Check before attempting classic buffer overflows. May need ROP chains or other bypass techniques.

7. Not setting up persistence early — Sessions die. Networks drop. Set up persistence (if in scope) before doing extensive post-exploitation.

8. Tunneling through unstable sessions — Don't pivot through a shell that might die. Migrate to a stable process first (e.g., explorer.exe, svchost.exe).

9. Not URL-encoding web payloads — XSS and SQLi payloads containing &, =, +, spaces break when not properly encoded. Always encode for the context.

10. Using default msfvenom output — Default payloads are instantly detected by AV. Use encoders, custom templates, or manual obfuscation for real engagements.

11. Cracking with wrong hash mode — Hashcat needs the correct -m mode. Identify the hash format first. Wrong mode = wasted time and false negatives.

12. Not documenting exploit chains — Record every command, every payload, every session. Reproducibility is critical for the final report.

Completion Criteria

This skill's work is DONE when ALL of the following are true:

• Every verified vulnerability has been attempted to at least L2 proof level
• Each exploitation attempt has a proof level classification (L1-L4)
• Exploitation evidence includes full reproducible steps (commands, requests, responses)
• Chain exploitation opportunities have been evaluated and documented
• All todo items created during this phase are marked complete

When all conditions are met, state "Phase complete: exploit-development" and stop. Do NOT write the final report or discover new vulnerabilities — those are other skills' jobs.
