Overview

GraphQL is a query language for APIs and a runtime for fulfilling those queries with existing data. While powerful, it introduces unique security challenges that differ from REST. This skill provides a comprehensive methodology for testing GraphQL implementations.

When to Use

• When a web application or mobile app communicates with a backend using GraphQL (typically identified by requests to /graphql, /graph, or similar).
• When discovering Apollo, Relay, or other GraphQL-based stacks.
• During any comprehensive web application security assessment where a GraphQL endpoint is identified.

Core Pattern

1. Discovery: Locate the GraphQL endpoint and identify the server implementation.
2. Introspection & Schema Analysis: Attempt to pull the full schema to understand types, queries, and mutations.
3. Authorization Testing: Test field-level permissions and relationship-based access.
4. Input Manipulation: Fuzz arguments, types, and directives.
5. DoS & Resource Exhaustion: Test query complexity and recursive fragment depth.
6. Advanced Features: Test Federation, Subscriptions, and Persisted Queries.

Execution Discipline

• Persist: Continue working through ALL steps until completion criteria are met. Do NOT stop after a single tool run or partial result.
• Scope: Work ONLY within this skill's methodology. Do NOT jump to another phase.
• Negative Results: If thorough testing reveals no vulnerabilities, that IS a valid result. Document what was tested and report "no findings" — do NOT invent issues.
• Retry Limit: Max 3 attempts per test. If blocked, classify the failure and proceed.

Attack Surface

• Endpoint Discovery: Often hidden at /v1/graphql, /api/graphql, or even internal dev routes.
• Schema Exposure: The __schema and __type meta-fields allow for introspection.

Even if introspection is "disabled," developers often forget to disable it for all roles or environments.

Bypass if disabled: Use error message inference. Probing for non-existent fields often returns "Did you mean 'actualFieldName'?" allowing for schema reconstruction.

2. Authorization Bypass (Field-level IDOR)

REST often checks auth at the endpoint. GraphQL requires checking at the resolver level.

Scenario: A user can query their own data but also another user's data via a nested field or a generic node() interface.

Bypass Techniques

• CORS/CSRF via GET: Some servers allow GraphQL queries via GET parameters, enabling CSRF if no custom headers are checked.
• Multipart Uploads: Exploiting graphql-upload to perform SSRF or upload malicious files by manipulating the map and file parameters.
• Directive Abuse: Using @defer or @stream to keep connections open and exhaust server resources.

Testing Methodology

1. Information Gathering:

   • Identify the endpoint using httpx or ffuf.
   • Fingerprint the engine (Apollo, Graphene, Hasura) using headers and error formats.

2. Schema Mapping:

   • Run full introspection if possible.
   • If blocked, use ffuf with a wordlist of common field names to map the schema via error responses.

3. In-depth Resolver Testing:

   • For every Mutation, test for missing authentication and authorization.
   • For Queries, look for IDORs in arguments and nested fields.
   • Test for SQL Injection or NoSQL Injection in arguments.

4. Resource Limit Testing:

   • Send deeply nested queries (10+ levels).
   • Send requests with 100+ aliases.
   • Send large batches of queries.

5. Advanced Vector Check:

   • Check if __schema is accessible via a different HTTP method (e.g., GET instead of POST).
   • Probe for internal fields like _debug or _config if using certain libraries.

Pro Tips

• Use a tool like GraphQL Voyager to visualize a dumped schema for better context.
• Always check for "Dev Mode" being left on in production, which often enables introspection and detailed stack traces.
• Look for x-hasura-admin-secret or similar headers in JS files if the target uses Hasura.

Common Mistakes

• Assuming Disabled Introspection = Secure: Error-based inference is extremely effective.
• Forgetting Field-Level Auth: Securing the root query doesn't secure the child resolvers.
• Ignoring Batching: Rate limiting per-request is useless if 1,000 operations are in one request.
• Trusting Client-Side Complexity Limits: Limits must be enforced on the server, not the client.
