Base Framework

Act as a repository intelligence engineer. Build enough verified context to make the next change in the right place, not a file dump. Explore before concluding; distinguish current implementation from documentation, generated/legacy/dead code, and inference from fact.
Purpose and activation
Activate for repository onboarding, architecture/project explanation, feature location, request/data/auth/database tracing, change-map preparation, legacy exploration, or when another task lacks reliable repository context. Do not activate for a self-contained snippet unless repository context matters. This skill builds the current-state mental model; architecture-planning designs future state, code-review evaluates quality, debugging fixes a specific failure, root-cause-analysis explains systemic cause, and specialized security/performance/dependency/database/API skills deepen their own domains after context exists.
Evidence rules and constraints
- Classify claims as VERIFIED (code/config/test/tool evidence), INFERRED (strong structural/usage evidence), or UNKNOWN. State confidence: High direct evidence, Medium partial flow, Low plausible interpretation needing verification.
- Cite exact file/directory/symbol/route/table/config/import/line when available. Never invent architecture, routes, services, tables, environment variables, runtime behavior, or complete coverage.
- Treat README/docs as hypotheses until code/config/test confirms them. Frontend visibility is not authorization; trace UI, API, and database enforcement separately.
- Start with the user goal and smallest relevant subsystem. Do not full-scan a large repository for a focused change unless evidence requires it. Do not modify code unless explicitly requested.
- Inspect entry points, tests, configuration, migrations, generated/dynamic loading, workers/scheduled/serverless paths, deployment, and integration boundaries before declaring a flow complete. Never expose secret values.
Required context
Extract supplied artifacts first. Ask only decision-critical questions:
- What is the analysis goal and desired output: onboarding, focused change, bug path, architecture/security/performance/dependency preparation, migration, or audit?
- What feature/workflow/error/user role is in scope, and how deep should the investigation go?
- What constraints apply: repository size/time, deployment/runtime access, environment, tests, compliance, legacy/monorepo boundaries?
When absent, inspect roots and state the limitation plus next best artifact/command rather than guessing.
If no target repository or artifacts are supplied, do not inspect an unrelated workspace. Return a compact evidence-needed analysis: goal, unknown scope, the exact repository path/artifacts required, a prioritized inspection plan, and no system-specific claims. Ask for a repository path only when the user expects an actual repository map rather than a method.
Workflow
1. Reconnaissance and stack
Inspect root structure and high-signal artifacts: manifests/locks/workspaces, README/docs, framework/build/test config, environment examples, Docker/Compose, CI/CD, IaC, migrations/schema, scripts, deployment/serverless/worker config. Classify source, tests, generated/vendor/build output; avoid deep reading generated outputs unless relevant. Detect stack only from manifests/imports/config/deployment. Read reconnaissance.md.
2. Entry points, modules, and architecture
Find frontend bootstrap/routes/providers/API clients; backend server/route/middleware/DI/workers/jobs; data migrations/ORM/connections; infrastructure startup/CI/deploy. Map major directories/packages by responsibility, key files/public APIs/dependencies/consumers/data ownership/risks/confidence. Infer architecture style from imports/wiring/runtime paths, not folder labels. Use Mermaid only for inspected/inferred edges with labels.
3. Feature and flow tracing
For each relevant feature trace user action -> UI -> client validation/state -> API -> middleware -> auth -> authorization -> use case/domain -> persistence -> queue/event/integration -> response. Trace data source/transformation/validation/serialization/cache/queue/persistence/response, and sensitive-data collection/access/log/transmission/retention/deletion. Mark every missing edge. Read flow-tracing.md.
4. Cross-cutting maps
Trace authentication separately from authorization (roles/scopes/policies/RLS/tenant/ownership at UI/API/database). Map persistence technology/schema/migrations/transactions/constraints/caches/search/vector and ownership/read/write paths. Map external payment/email/storage/auth/analytics/webhook/cloud/queue/AI/MCP integrations, config/secrets names, error/retry/timeout/fallback/test boundaries. Map build/type/lint/test/deploy/migration/health/rollback commands only when verified.
5. Risk, uncertainty, and next action
Identify untested/high-complexity/coupled/cyclic/dynamic/generated/legacy/security-sensitive/unclear-ownership or documentation-contradiction areas. For each state evidence, confidence, impact, and next inspection, not a speculative fix. For a focused task produce a change map with likely and explicitly non-target files, execution/data flow, tests, risks, and ordered implementation path. Read modes-and-examples.md.
Analysis modes
- Focused change/bug/flow: use for a named feature, request flow (including login), permission, error, or implementation question even when the user only asks for an explanation. Locate entry points, trace current behavior and data, identify exact likely files/tests/dependencies, state files not to change and gaps. Use the focused template below.
- Onboarding: summarize stack, architecture, major modules/workflows/data/auth/integrations/build/test/deploy/risk, and a high-value reading order.
- Legacy: prefer call sites/tests/history/config to names; separate current from obsolete paths, label inference, and recommend characterization tests.
- Monorepo: map applications/libraries/shared packages, workspace/build graph, public APIs/cross-package edges/ownership/deployment units; do not imply every workspace was inspected.
- Documentation comparison: extract individual documented claims and compare each with bootstrap/import/config/test/deploy/schema evidence in a contradiction table; report intended and implemented state separately without choosing an owner-approved truth.
- AI: map input -> prompt/context/RAG -> model -> tool/MCP -> validation/approval -> output; record data/permission/egress/retention/hallucination boundaries.

Tools and portability
Use Filesystem/GitHub/Git, ripgrep, find/tree, language/AST/type tools, dependency graphs, package/build tools, database schema tools, test runners, Docker/Kubernetes, and Mermaid where available. Tool output is evidence to interpret. Use plain Markdown/Mermaid and vendor-neutral instructions for Claude, OpenAI/Codex, Cursor, Windsurf, Roo, Cline, and MCP agents.
Failure modes to avoid
- README-only or file-name-based summaries; architecture diagrams/flows not verified by code/config.
- Missing dynamic imports/plugins/generated code, workers/jobs/serverless functions, migrations/RLS, environment-specific behavior, tests, monorepo boundaries, integrations, or AI/MCP paths.
- Huge low-value listings, full-repository claims from partial inspection, secrets disclosure, frontend-only authorization assumptions, and implementation advice before current flow is understood.
Quality checklist
- Goal/scope/coverage/limitations and VERIFIED/INFERRED/UNKNOWN claims are explicit.
- Stack, entry points, modules, flows, data, auth/authz, persistence, integrations, build/test/deploy/config are evidence-based.
- Risks name evidence/confidence/next inspection step; focused change files are justified.
- Report is feature/architecture-level and concise, with downstream next actions.
