What This Skill Does
Captures a confidence rating (0–100) before a knowledge attempt and again after receiving feedback, then compares the two. The AI identifies and names the pattern: overconfidence (high confidence + poor performance) and underconfidence (low confidence + good performance) are both worth surfacing. Over time, tracking calibration accuracy becomes itself a metacognitive skill — learners who can accurately predict their own knowledge gaps are significantly better at allocating study time. This skill makes the "illusion of competence" visible and actionable.
Evidence Foundation
Bjork & Bjork (2011) identified the illusion of competence as one of the primary obstacles to effective self-study: re-reading material produces a feeling of familiarity that learners mistake for genuine understanding. Students leave a study session feeling more confident than their actual knowledge warrants — and they study less as a result. Koriat & Bjork (2005) demonstrated that studying with self-referential judgements (asking "do I know this?") produces systematically biased predictions in which learners overestimate their own performance, particularly when material was recently studied. Thiede et al. (2003) showed that accuracy of metacognitive monitoring directly affects learning outcomes: students who are better calibrated allocate their study time more effectively, spending more time on material they actually don't know. Dunning & Kruger (1999) documented the broader pattern: novices in a domain not only perform poorly but lack the knowledge to recognise their own performance gaps, producing inflated self-assessment. Hacker et al. (2008) found in a classroom study that students who made test predictions before sitting exams, then compared predictions to results, showed improved performance on subsequent assessments — suggesting that the comparison act itself has metacognitive training value.

Pattern A — OVERCONFIDENCE (high confidence before, poor performance):
"Interesting — you came in at [X] but the attempt showed [accuracy level]. That gap — feeling more confident than your knowledge supports — is called the illusion of competence. It's really common after re-reading, because familiarity feels like understanding. The fix is retrieval practice: testing yourself rather than re-reading. Does that match your study habits recently?"
Pattern B — UNDERCONFIDENCE (low confidence before, good performance):
"Notice this: you said [X] before, but your attempt was actually [accuracy level]. You knew more than you thought. This is also useful information — underestimating your knowledge can make you over-study things you already have, at the expense of things you genuinely need. What do you think caused the low estimate?"
Pattern C — WELL-CALIBRATED (confidence roughly matched performance):
"Your estimate matched your performance pretty closely — that's a real skill. Well-calibrated learners are better at allocating their study time because they're honest about what they know and don't know. Let's see if this holds on a harder question."
Pattern D — CONFIDENCE DROPPED SIGNIFICANTLY (started confident, ended much lower):
"Your confidence dropped quite a bit after the attempt. What surprised you most? Is this a case of 'felt familiar but couldn't retrieve it' — or something else?"

STEP 5 — SET A MICRO-GOAL:
Based on the calibration gap, propose one specific action: "Given what you've just seen, what's the one thing most worth doing before your next session with this material? Not everything — just the most important one."

WARM-START PROTOCOL — use this if the learner says "I don't know" before rating confidence:
"Even 'I don't know' is data — that's a 0 or close to it. But before we go there, let me ask: have you encountered {{topic_or_question}} before? Even briefly?"
If yes: "Then give me a number between 0 and 30. You've seen it; you just don't feel solid on it. That's still a rating."
If no: "That's fine — let's set the confidence at 5 (nearly blank) and try the attempt anyway. Sometimes you know more than you think."

EDGE CASES:
Learner always says 50%: "Is that genuinely your uncertainty, or are you hedging to avoid committing? Try pushing in a direction — are you above or below halfway confident? Commit to a side." If they continue defaulting to 50: "Okay, let's test it and see where 50 actually lands."
Learner never adjusts their confidence rating after feedback: Note this: "Your confidence stayed at [X] even after we worked through [accuracy]. Is that because you think the evaluation was off, or is the rating sticky for another reason?"
Learner is consistently well-calibrated: "Your confidence tracking is accurate across several checks — that's a real metacognitive skill. Let's test it on something harder [introduce a harder question or edge case]."
Learner becomes anxious about ratings: "This isn't graded. The point isn't to have the right confidence — it's to notice the gap between how sure you feel and how much you actually know. That gap is where the most useful studying happens. You can't be wrong in a bad way here."
Learner keeps overconfidence pattern across sessions: "I'm noticing a pattern: your confidence estimates are consistently coming in above your performance. This is really common with material you've read or heard recently. The fix that research shows works best is retrieval practice — testing yourself, not re-reading. Learner: It's about equilibrium... when you change conditions, the reaction shifts to counteract the change. So if you increase temperature it shifts... I think to the endothermic side? And if you increase pressure it shifts to reduce the number of moles of gas.
AI: Good — you've got the core structure right: a system at equilibrium responds to a stress by shifting to oppose it. The temperature direction is correct: increasing temperature favours the endothermic direction (absorbs heat, opposing the temperature increase). The pressure point is also right.
There's one thing missing: you didn't mention concentration changes, which is the most commonly tested application. And one precision issue: the "reducing moles of gas" part is right, but can you say what it would do if there are equal moles of gas on both sides? Does pressure have an effect there?

Edge case handled: The learner displayed classic post-reading overconfidence (75 before, partial performance). The AI named it clearly and specifically — "reading produces familiarity which feels like understanding" — and tied it to a concrete study-habit change rather than leaving it as an abstract observation.
Known Limitations
The 0–100 confidence scale is intuitive but not psychometrically calibrated. Different learners interpret the scale differently. A 70 from a naturally anxious learner may represent stronger actual knowledge than a 70 from an overconfident one. The skill uses relative calibration (before vs. after, across sessions) rather than absolute numbers — which is more informative than any single rating.
The calibration pattern depends on the quality of the performance evaluation. If the AI misjudges the accuracy of the learner's attempt — calling something "partial" when it was actually strong, or missing a genuine misconception — the calibration feedback will be misleading. The AI's subject-matter accuracy is a hard dependency.
Frequent calibration checks can produce strategic responding if learners game the rating. A learner who understands the pattern may artificially lower pre-attempt confidence to appear "well-calibrated" after a good performance. This is unlikely with genuinely motivated learners but worth noting.
Calibration data across sessions requires session history to be useful. A single calibration check gives a snapshot. The pattern — persistent overconfidence, improving calibration — only becomes visible over multiple sessions.
