Before the Observation

- Evidence of strong practice: Students engage fully with the checking task — they think, write, discuss. The check has become a routine that students value because they know the teacher will use it to help them.
- Evidence of developing practice: Students write minimal responses, copy from neighbours, or don't respond at all. The check has become a ritual with no perceived value.
- How to record: Note the level of student engagement during each checking moment. Count approximate participation rate.

Post-Observation Feedback Framework

The quality of feedback depends on the observer's skill. A well-designed protocol in the hands of an observer who delivers feedback judgementally will produce defensiveness, not growth. Developmental observation and performance management observation require different approaches. This protocol is designed for developmental purposes.
