What This Skill Does
Designs a learning task that productively uses mixed-age groupings — creating genuine interdependence between older and younger students so that BOTH age groups learn. Task Overview

What Year 2 learns: Fractions introduced through concrete, hands-on activities with one-to-one scaffolding from someone who recently learned the same concepts. The Year 4 student's explanations are often more accessible than adult explanations because they use child-friendly language and recently overcame the same conceptual hurdles. The ZPD is optimised: halves and quarters are within reach for a Year 2 student with appropriate scaffolding, and the Year 4 partner provides exactly that scaffolding.
Tutor Preparation
Before Week 1 (30-minute preparation session with Year 4 students only):
Teach the Year 4 students four tutoring principles:
Ask before you tell. "Before you explain something, ask your partner what they already know. 'What do you think a half means?' You might be surprised — they might already know some of it."
Use the materials. "Don't just SAY 'half of 8 is 4.' SHOW it. Split 8 counters into two equal groups. Let your partner do the splitting."

- Communication skills. Translating mathematical understanding into clear, age-appropriate language is a demanding cognitive and linguistic task.
Year 2 students learn:
- Initial fraction concepts (halves and quarters) through concrete, hands-on activities with one-to-one scaffolding — exactly the introduction the research recommends.
- Mathematical language. Hearing an older child use fraction vocabulary in a natural, conversational context supports language acquisition more effectively than formal instruction.

Adaptation Notes
For larger age gaps (3+ years): The tutoring protocol becomes more important — a Year 6 student may struggle to calibrate explanations for a Reception child without explicit training. Consider using a "teaching script" for the first session: a structured sequence of activities the older student follows, which provides scaffolding for the TUTOR as well as the tutee.
For groups rather than pairs: Use triads (one older, two younger) rather than larger groups. In groups of 4+, the tutoring becomes diffuse and some younger students will disengage. With two younger students, the older student can alternate attention and the younger students can learn from each other as well.
For one-off sessions: Reduce the ambition. A single session can introduce one concept (halves) but cannot build the relationship and routines that make regular mixed-age work powerful. If this is a one-off, focus on a simple, self-contained activity with a tangible shared outcome (a poster, a model, a short presentation).
For non-Montessori schools: Mixed-age learning doesn't require Montessori structures. It works in any school that can organise cross-class sessions. The main barriers are timetabling (getting two year groups together) and teacher coordination (agreeing on the learning objectives and structure). Start with a single subject area and a manageable number of pairs before scaling up.
Known Limitations
The peer tutoring evidence is stronger than the Montessori mixed-age evidence specifically. Hattie's (2009) effect size of 0.55 and Topping's (2005) meta-analysis provide robust evidence for peer tutoring as a general strategy. Lillard et al. (2006) and Lillard (2005) provide evidence for Montessori mixed-age grouping specifically, but this evidence is embedded within whole-programme evaluations — the specific contribution of age mixing cannot be isolated. The task design above draws on both bodies of evidence.
The older student must be genuinely confident with the content. If a Year 4 student is still struggling with fractions themselves, asking them to teach fractions to a Year 2 student will produce confusion for both. The task assumes that the older student has MASTERED the content — tutoring consolidates and deepens existing knowledge; it does not create knowledge from scratch. Teachers must check that the older students are ready before assigning them as tutors.
Social dynamics can undermine the learning. Some older students may be condescending ("That's easy, you should know this"); some younger students may be anxious or intimidated; some pairs may simply not get along. The tutor preparation session should address respect and patience explicitly, and the teacher should monitor pair dynamics, reassigning if necessary.
Mixed-age grouping requires timetable coordination. In schools with rigid timetables and separate year-group classes, arranging cross-age sessions is a logistical challenge. The most common implementation is a weekly "buddy" session, but this requires agreement between at least two teachers and alignment of curriculum timing. The logistical barrier is often more significant than the pedagogical design challenge.
