The challenge is designing prompts that actually elicit deep self-explanation rather than shallow restating. "Why does this step follow from the previous one?" is a good self-explanation prompt. "What happens in this step?" is not — it elicits description, not explanation. AI is specifically valuable here because it can deliver prompts at exactly the right moment (during study, not after) and can evaluate the quality of student responses in real time.

Evidence Foundation

• Target explanation: "9 comes from (6/2)² = 3² = 9. We take the coefficient of x (which is 6), halve it (3), and square it (9). We use THIS specific number because x² + 6x + 9 = (x + 3)² — it's the number that makes the left side a PERFECT SQUARE TRINOMIAL. No other number would do this."
• Why here: This is the conceptual heart of the method. The "where does 9 come from?" question targets the most common misconception directly. If a student can explain this, they understand completing the square.
• Common shallow response: "Because it completes the square" — this is circular (restating the method name without explaining the mechanism).
• Follow-up if shallow: "What does 'completing the square' actually mean? Try this: expand (x + 3)². What do you get? Now look at x² + 6x + 9. Notice anything?"

Prompt 3 — placed at: Step 5 (x + 3 = ±√7)

• Why here: The ± is a conceptual tripwire — students routinely forget it or don't understand why it's there. This prompt forces them to engage with the mathematical reason, not just memorise the symbol.
• Common shallow response: "Because it's ±" or "because that's the rule" — restating the notation without explaining the reasoning.
• Follow-up if shallow: "Try it without the ±. If x + 3 = √7, what's x? Now check: does that value actually solve the original equation? Now try x + 3 = -√7. Does THAT value also solve the original equation?"

Quality Indicators

Scaffolding Sequence

For students who struggle to self-explain, move through these levels:

Level 1 — Open prompt (default): "Explain why we added 9 to both sides."

Level 2 — Directed prompt: "Look at the number in front of x (it's 6). Try halving it. Now try squaring what you get. What number do you get? Does that match what was added?"

Level 3 — Verification prompt: "Try expanding (x + 3)². What do you get? Now compare that to x² + 6x + 9. What do you notice?"

Level 4 — Completion prompt: "We add (b/2)² because x² + bx + (b/2)² = (x + b/2)². In this case, b = 6, so (b/2)² = ___. And x² + 6x + ___ = (x + ___)². Fill in the blanks."

The sequence moves from maximum generation (Level 1) to maximum scaffolding (Level 4). Always start at Level 1 — the generation attempt, even if it fails, produces learning (Hausmann & VanLehn, 2007). Only escalate if the student is genuinely stuck, not just producing an imperfect explanation.

Known Limitations

1. Self-explanation prompts slow down study time. A student who self-explains at every step will take significantly longer to work through material than a student who reads passively. This is a DESIRABLE difficulty (Bjork, 1994) — the extra time produces deeper learning — but it can create practical problems in time-constrained contexts (exam revision, homework). Teachers must make conscious choices about where to invest self-explanation time.

2. The quality of self-explanation is hard to evaluate automatically. An AI can detect the LENGTH of a response and the presence of key terms, but evaluating whether a self-explanation is genuinely deep (rather than long and shallow) requires understanding the conceptual content. Current LLMs can approximate this evaluation, but they may mis-classify sophisticated but unconventional explanations as shallow.

3. Self-explanation works best with conceptually rich material. Procedural content with minimal conceptual depth (e.g., formatting a spreadsheet, conjugating regular verbs) benefits less from self-explanation prompts because there is less to EXPLAIN. Self-explanation is most powerful when the material contains non-obvious reasoning, hidden connections, or common misconceptions.

4. Students may need training to self-explain. Chi et al. (1994) found that prompting alone was effective, but other studies suggest that students benefit from initial training in what a good self-explanation looks like. The scaffolding sequence above addresses this, but in the first session using self-explanation prompts, the teacher may need to model the process explicitly.
