What This Skill Does
After the learner demonstrates understanding of a concept, presents a near-transfer challenge (same principle, slightly different surface) and a far-transfer challenge (same underlying principle, substantially different domain or context). Asks the learner three questions about each: what is the same, what is different, and what principle travels across the contexts? This tests whether learning is portable — whether the learner has grasped the underlying structure or merely the surface features of the examples they studied. Far-transfer failure after near-transfer success is common and informative: it reveals that the concept was learned contextually rather than abstractly.
Evidence Foundation
Bransford & Schwartz (1999) proposed a reconceptualisation of transfer as "preparation for future learning" — arguing that the most important measure of understanding is not whether the learner can immediately transfer a concept but whether they can learn a new but related concept more efficiently. Their work showed that students who struggled with novel applications before receiving instruction retained more when instruction came, compared to students who had only practised standard versions. Gick & Holyoak (1983) demonstrated that analogical transfer depends on recognising structural similarity between problems — and that surface similarity is the primary obstacle: learners who see the same problem in a different surface form often fail to transfer their knowledge. They showed that explicitly naming the underlying principle, rather than just solving instances, significantly improves transfer. Perkins & Salomon (1992) distinguish near transfer (same context, similar surface) and far transfer (different context, same deep structure) and note that far transfer requires "high road" transfer — deliberate abstraction of the principle from its original context. Kapur (2016) showed that students who engaged with novel applications before consolidation produced better transfer outcomes than students who consolidated first — suggesting that the struggle of applying a principle to an unfamiliar context is itself a learning mechanism. Biswas et al. (2016) found that students who taught concepts to an AI agent (Betty's Brain) showed better transfer performance than students who studied normally, because the teaching process required abstracting the concept from specific examples.

After the learner's attempt:

EVALUATING TRANSFER ATTEMPTS:
Successful near transfer: "Good — you applied the principle correctly in a new surface context. Notice that you identified [mechanism] as the key — that's the portable piece."
Near transfer by pattern matching (correct answer but can't name the principle): "You got it right, but let me check something: why does [approach] work here? What rule justifies it?" If they can't explain: the transfer was procedural, not conceptual. Push toward explanation.
Successful far transfer: "That's solid. The fact that you can see {{concept}} in [very different domain] means your understanding has gone beyond the examples. That's what durable learning looks like."
Far transfer failure: "That's expected — far transfer is hard. Let me show you the connection, and then tell me if it makes sense: [explain the structural similarity]. Does that bridge make the link visible?" Ask: "What would you need to study to make this connection more accessible next time?"
Learner refuses to attempt transfer: "Just try describing what's similar between the two situations — even roughly. You don't need to solve it; just describe the structure."

AI: You've demonstrated understanding of supply and demand in a market context. Now I want to see if that understanding travels. There are two levels: near transfer (same principle, different situation) and far transfer (different domain, same underlying structure).
Near transfer: In a housing market, the number of available houses in a popular neighbourhood stays roughly constant for several years while the neighbourhood becomes much more desirable. What happens to house prices, and why?
Learner: They go up. More people want to live there but there aren't more houses, so they have to pay more to outcompete each other.
AI: Correct. What's the same here as in the original supply and demand example?
Learner: The principle is the same — demand went up, supply stayed the same, price rises. Just a different market.
AI: Exactly. That's near transfer — the surface is different (housing vs. widgets) but the principle is identical. Now far transfer — genuinely harder.
Far transfer: In a biology class, students are studying the relationship between a limited food resource in an ecosystem and a population of animals that eat it. The food resource stays constant but the population size increases. Predict what happens to the average food available per animal, and explain why.
Learner: The average food per animal goes down because more animals are sharing the same amount of food... wait, is this the same idea?
AI: What's making you think it might be?
Learner: It's like supply and demand again — the demand (animals) went up but the supply (food) stayed the same, so each animal gets less of the resource. It's not money changing hands but the underlying idea is the same — competition for a fixed resource.
AI: That's exactly the transfer. The core principle: when demand for a fixed resource increases, each unit of demand receives a smaller share. It works in economics, ecology, bandwidth allocation, time scheduling — any domain where resources are fixed and demand is variable.
Three questions to lock it in:
- What's the same?
- What's different?
- What's the core principle?
Learner: Same: fixed resource, rising demand, diminishing share per unit. Different: economics uses price as the signal; ecology doesn't — animals don't "pay" for food, they just compete for it. Core principle: when demand exceeds supply of a fixed resource, each claimant gets less.
AI: Strong. You've abstracted it away from both the economic and biological surfaces to the underlying structure. That's what portable understanding looks like.
One last check: generate a third context where this principle applies — somewhere I haven't mentioned.
Learner: Maybe... server bandwidth? If more users connect to a server but the bandwidth doesn't increase, each user gets a slower connection?
AI: Yes. Exactly. Transfer successful.
Far-transfer failure handled:
Learner: [on the ecology problem] I don't know — I don't see how this relates to supply and demand at all.
AI: Don't try to solve it yet. Just describe the situation: what do you have (fixed) and what's changing?
Learner: Fixed: food supply. Changing: number of animals.
AI: And what are the animals trying to do with the food?

AI: Here's the bridge: substitute "animals competing for food" for "buyers competing for limited goods." The currency changes — it's not money, it's survival. But the structure is the same: fixed supply, rising demand, each unit of demand gets less. Does that connection make the problem visible?
Learner: Oh — yeah. So the "price" in the ecology version isn't money, it's the cost of competition itself.
AI: Exactly. Far transfer is hard because the surface differences hide the structural similarity. The connection requires abstracting through the surface. Now that you see it — what would help you see it faster next time?
Known Limitations
Generating good far-transfer problems requires genuine cross-domain knowledge. The AI must identify a domain where the same underlying principle applies in a non-obvious way. A far-transfer problem that is too obviously the same type (just relabelled) tests near transfer. This is a substantive quality requirement — the AI's domain knowledge constrains the quality of the transfer challenges.
Far-transfer failure is common and expected but can be discouraging. The framing — "failing it is useful information, not a sign you haven't learned" — must be genuine and consistent. A learner who feels penalised for failing far transfer may disengage.
Transfer success on AI-facilitated problems does not guarantee unassisted transfer. The presence of the AI bridge (questions, framing, structural hints) may enable transfer that wouldn't occur independently. This is partially addressed by pairing with 20-11 (Unassisted Evidence Checkpoint) and by asking the learner to generate their own third example.
The skill is most valuable for conceptual and principle-based knowledge. Procedural skills (arithmetic operations, grammar rules) transfer via practice; the transfer bridge is most valuable for conceptual structures, theories, frameworks, and models where the "same principle, different domain" question is meaningful.
