What This Skill Does
After scaffolded practice, schedules and administers an unassisted check — a problem or question the learner must attempt with absolutely no AI help, hints, or scaffolding. The result is tagged as assistance_tag: unassisted in the evidence record. This is the direct operationalisation of the Bastani guardrail: Bastani et al. (2025) found that students who used GPT-4 freely on practice problems performed 17% worse on subsequent unassisted assessments compared to students who practised without AI. The unassisted checkpoint separates what the learner can do with the AI from what they can do without it — which is what matters for actual exams and independent transfer.
Evidence Foundation
Bastani et al. (2025), published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, ran a controlled study with high school students learning algebra. One group had free access to GPT-4 for problem-solving assistance; another did not. The GPT-4 group performed significantly better on AI-assisted practice but 17% worse on subsequent unassisted assessments. The mechanism: students who could always access help offloaded the cognitive work of problem-solving to the AI rather than building independent competence — what the authors term "phantom attainment." A third group in the study that used an AI tutor which required attempts before hints (a retrieval-first approach) did not show this performance degradation, suggesting the issue is not AI use per se but AI use without cognitive engagement. Koedinger & Aleven (2007) identified the "assistance dilemma" in intelligent tutoring systems: providing help makes learning easier in the moment but reduces the effortful processing that produces durable learning. STEP 1 — FRAMING:

STEP 2 — SET THE PROBLEM:
Generate a problem at appropriate difficulty that:
- Tests the same concept or skill as the scaffolded session
- Is at least slightly different in surface form from problems worked on during scaffolded practice (to test genuine learning, not memorisation of a specific worked example)
- Is genuinely solvable without additional information for a learner who understood the scaffolded session
Present the problem clearly: "Here's your unassisted problem: [problem]. Take as long as you need. Show all your working. When you've finished, submit it and I'll review."

STEP 3 — NO HELP DURING THE ATTEMPT:
During the attempt, if the learner asks for help or a hint:
First request: "This one is just you — no hints. Give it your best attempt and we'll review together after. What do you have so far?"
Second request: "I know this is frustrating. Try writing down everything you do know about this problem, even if you can't complete it. A partial attempt with reasoning is much more useful than a blank."
Third request: "I hear you're stuck. For this checkpoint, the most valuable thing is to see where you get to on your own. Try starting and getting as far as you can — even if it's incomplete. Submit what you have."
Do NOT provide hints, clues, or partial information during the unassisted window, regardless of how stuck the learner appears. The unassisted tag is only valid if the attempt was genuinely independent.

STEP 4 — REVIEW AND COMPARE:
After submission, ask for post-attempt confidence: "How do you feel about that now? What number?"
Evaluate the attempt:
- Compare to scaffolded session performance
- Identify what transferred and what didn't
- Tag the result: assistance_tag = unassisted
Then deliver the comparison honestly:
If unassisted performance is similar to scaffolded performance: "You got this without help. That's real learning — you didn't just understand it with support, you can do it independently. [Name what they got right.] This is worth remembering when you're calibrating how ready you are for an exam."
If unassisted performance is notably weaker than scaffolded performance: "This is the most important result of the session. You did [description] with support, but without it you found [description] harder. That gap between assisted and unassisted performance — that's exactly what Bastani and colleagues documented: the risk of AI-assisted study is doing well when the AI is there but not being able to do it when it isn't. What felt different working alone?"
If completely stuck on the unassisted problem: "You got stuck here on your own. That's genuinely useful information — it means the scaffolded session moved you forward, but not far enough yet for independent application. That's not failure; it's an accurate picture of where you are. Let's look at what specifically was different about this problem compared to the ones we worked on together."

Ask one reflection question based on the result:
If strong unassisted: "What do you think explains the difference between how it felt when you were doing it with support versus on your own?"
If gap between assisted and unassisted: "What would you do differently in your next study session to close that gap?"
If stuck: "If you were going to study this again tomorrow, what would you focus on to help you get past the point where you got stuck today?"

Learner asks for help during unassisted window: Firm redirect as above. Do not negotiate on this — the unassisted tag is binary. If the learner submitted a partial attempt that included AI help, note this in the evidence record as assisted, not unassisted.
Learner does poorly on unassisted check after strong scaffolded performance: This is the skill's highest-value output. Respond with genuine interest: "Interesting — you did well with support but found this harder alone. That's important information. What felt different?" Avoid making the learner feel the gap is a failure.
Learner does very well on unassisted check: Celebrate genuinely: "You got this without help. That's real learning." Then advance: "Let's see if it holds on a harder version — or a different context."
Learner is distressed by performing poorly without AI help: "I want to be clear: doing worse without the AI is normal when you're still building a skill. For the record: this is tagged as unassisted performance, which is different from what you produced earlier with scaffolding. That distinction matters when you're deciding how exam-ready you are.
One question: what felt different about working alone versus working with support?
Learner: I had to slow down and think about each atom rather than just following instructions. I had to actually check my own work.
AI: That slowing-down is the skill. That's what you'll be doing in an exam. Good checkpoint.
Alternative scenario (gap between assisted and unassisted):

Known Limitations
The unassisted checkpoint cannot be cryptographically enforced. The skill relies on the learner's honest participation — it cannot verify they haven't consulted another AI, their notes, or a textbook. It is designed for self-determined learners who want to know their genuine independent capability, not as an assessment instrument.
Problem calibration matters significantly. If the unassisted problem is too different in surface form from the scaffolded practice, the gap between assisted and unassisted performance may reflect novelty rather than dependence on scaffolding. The skill instructs the AI to use a slightly different surface form, but calibrating "slightly different" correctly requires good judgment.
A single checkpoint is insufficient to characterise a learner's independent capability. One unassisted problem is a data point, not a reliable measure. The pattern across multiple sessions — consistent gaps, improving independence — is more informative than any single checkpoint result.
The firm no-help rule can distress anxious learners. The redirect scripts are designed to be warm while holding the line, but for highly anxious students, a boundary that can't be negotiated may feel punishing. Context matters — a student who is already distressed may need the rule explained more carefully, or the checkpoint deferred to a calmer moment.
