An argument is not just a claim — it's a claim supported by evidence, connected by reasoning, and organized for persuasive effect. Three dominant models exist for structuring arguments, each suited to different situations. The single most useful concept across all three is Toulmin's warrant: the often-unstated assumption that links evidence to conclusion.
Key Concepts
The Toulmin Model
Stephen Toulmin (The Uses of Argument, 1958) breaks arguments into six components:
- Claim: The main assertion
- Grounds: Evidence and facts supporting the claim
- Warrant: The assumption linking grounds to claim — the bridge between evidence and conclusion
- Backing: Additional support for the warrant itself
- Qualifier: Limits on universality ("in most cases," "generally")
- Rebuttal: Acknowledgment of where the argument might not hold
The warrant is the key insight. Every argument contains an unstated assumption connecting evidence to conclusion. If the audience shares the warrant, the argument feels self-evident. If they don't, no amount of evidence will convince them — because the bridge is missing.
Example: "We should fund this program (claim) because it reduced recidivism by 40% (grounds)." The unstated warrant: reducing recidivism is a legitimate goal of public spending. If the audience doesn't share that warrant, the evidence is irrelevant.
Skilled writers either make their warrant explicit (when the audience might not share it) or leave it implicit (when it's uncontroversial). Detecting an unshared warrant is the single most useful diagnostic for arguments that should convince but don't.
The Rogerian Model
Based on Carl Rogers' conflict-resolution principles. The structure:
- State the problem neutrally — without tipping your hand
- Explain the opposing view fairly — demonstrate genuine understanding
- Present your position — only after honoring the other side
- Identify common ground — where do the positions overlap?
- Propose a solution both sides can accept — synthesis, not victory
This model is designed for polarized topics where the reader might be hostile. Its strength: it requires the writer to genuinely understand the opposing view before arguing against it. Its limitation: it can feel conflict-averse when the writer's position genuinely opposes the alternative.
Classical (Aristotelian) Structure
The most direct, assertive form:
- Introduction (exordium) — establish the context and your credibility
- Statement of facts (narratio) — present the relevant background
- Division (partitio) — outline what you will argue
- Proof (confirmatio) — present your evidence and reasoning
- Refutation (refutatio) — address and dismantle counterarguments
- Conclusion (peroratio) — synthesize and call to action
This works when the writer has strong evidence and a clear position. Its limitation: it can feel adversarial and closed.
The Volta (Turn) in Essays
Borrowed from the sonnet's volta, the turn is the moment in an essay where the argument shifts, deepens, reverses, or complicates itself. It is not a transition — it's a moment of genuine intellectual movement.
The turn separates a thesis-driven essay from an exploratory one. In exploratory essays, the turn is often the moment the writer discovers what they actually think. In argumentative essays, the turn is typically where the counterargument enters and the argument must deepen to accommodate it.
Strong essayists create turns that feel inevitable in retrospect but surprising in the moment. Baldwin turns personal grief into political argument. Didion turns observation into implicit judgment. Sontag turns historical survey into present-tense polemic.
Concession and Rebuttal
The art of acknowledging opposing views:
- Partial concession: "While it's true that X, this doesn't undermine Y because..."
- Full concession with rebuttal: Agree with the point entirely, then show it doesn't lead to the opposing conclusion
- Strategic concession: Concede a minor point to strengthen credibility for a larger claim
The craft principle: be respectful and fair. Taking cheap shots at opposing views undermines the writer's ethos, even if the reader agrees with the writer's position.
When This Applies
- The user needs to organize an argument or persuasive essay
- An argument is logically sound but structurally weak (the evidence is there but arranged badly)
- The user asks about counterarguments, the Toulmin model, or essay structure
- An argument isn't landing — the warrant diagnostic can identify why
- The user is writing for a hostile or skeptical audience (Rogerian model)
