The Two Interlocking Questions

Every authentication task answers two questions that depend on each other.

1. Material authenticity — does the physical substrate (paper, canvas, metal, glass, wood, ink, pigment, fiber) match what the seller claims it should be for an object of that origin? This is a science question, answered by forensic methods.
2. Provenance — does the documented chain of ownership corroborate the attribution? This is a historical-research question, answered by sales records, exhibition catalogs, family papers, and institutional archives.

A piece that passes one test and fails the other is not authentic. A 1925 painting on a canvas containing titanium white (which was not commercially produced until 1921 and not widespread until ~1930) is suspect regardless of how good the provenance looks on paper. A canvas of correct period materials with no documented ownership between the artist's studio in 1925 and a 2010 European estate sale is also suspect. Both legs must stand.

Forensic Methods — A Working Vocabulary

These are the tools that working authenticators apply. The collector doesn't have to run them — but should know what each one does and when to demand it.

• XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence) — non-destructive elemental analysis of paint or metal. Detects anachronistic pigments (titanium white pre-1921, phthalo blue pre-1935, cadmium yellow pre-1840s). Portable units exist for on-site analysis. Multi-technique integration is essential — Nature Heritage Science explicitly warns against standalone pXRF claims.
• MA-XRF (Macro X-Ray Fluorescence) — scanning XRF that maps an entire painting, revealing underdrawings, pentimenti, and pigment layering. Used by major museums and the Rijksmuseum's Operation Night Watch.
• Raman spectroscopy — identifies specific molecules in pigment or binder. Catches modern synthetic pigments masquerading as historical ones.
• FTIR (Fourier-Transform Infrared) — characterizes organic binders (linseed oil, egg tempera, synthetic resins). Acrylic in a putatively 19th-century work is decisive evidence of forgery.
• SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) — surface morphology and microstructure. Used on metals for coin authentication and on paper for fiber analysis.
• 14C (Carbon-14) dating — dates organic materials (canvas, paper, ivory, wood). Useful for catching forgeries on modern canvas claiming to be from earlier periods. Has uncertainty bands; not appropriate for narrow date claims.
• Dendrochronology — tree-ring dating of panel paintings. Definitive for date-of-earliest-possible-creation on northern European panel paintings.
• HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) — separates and identifies organic compounds; used in wine authentication and dye analysis on textiles.
• Py-GCMS (Pyrolysis Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) — molecular fingerprinting of organic binders and varnishes.
• Black-light examination — UV fluorescence reveals retouches, recoloring, and modern repairs. Cheap and immediate; first-line screening tool for paintings, comics, cards.

Provenance — The Chain of Custody

The strongest provenance is documented from the artist's hand to the current consignor, with no gaps, no anonymous links, and at least one passage through a major institutional collection or major auction house. This is rare. Most provenance has at least one weak link; the question is how weak, and where.

Reading Provenance Documents

• Sales records from major houses (Christie's, Sotheby's, Phillips, Bonhams, Heritage). The strongest documentary evidence — these institutions warranty their cataloging and their records are auditable. The "repeat consignor" signal is meaningful: pieces previously sold at a major house and returning to that house carry an unbroken institutional audit trail.
• Exhibition catalogs. A piece illustrated and discussed in a museum exhibition catalog is provenance-strong; the curator's attribution becomes part of the documentary record.
• Catalogue raisonné inclusion. For artists with a published raisonné (Picasso, Matisse, Pollock, Calder), inclusion is the gold standard of attribution. Exclusion is not conclusive evidence against authenticity — many pieces are simply unknown at time of cataloging — but it is a meaningful signal.
• Letters, family papers, gift inscriptions, dedications. Useful but verifiable only by trained eye. Letters can be forged; inscriptions can be added.
• Photographs in known archives. A photograph of the piece in the artist's studio (Steiglitz, Brassaï, Cartier-Bresson) carries enormous weight if the photograph's authenticity is independently established.

Red Flags in Provenance

• Story-driven provenance with no paper trail. "Found in a Swiss attic." "From the estate of a Romanian princess." These stories sometimes turn out to be true. Most do not.
• Provenance jumping a politically charged decade. 1933–1945 gap in a European painting → Nazi-era looted-art consideration. 1949–1979 gap on something traded out of Hong Kong → Cultural Revolution dispersal possibilities. These gaps don't prove anything, but they require explanation.
• "Private collection, Europe" / "Asian collection" with no further detail. The provenance is being deliberately obscured. Discount the price accordingly.
• A COA from an entity that is not the artist's estate, foundation, raisonné committee, or a vetted third-party. A COA is only as authoritative as the signer.

The COA Hierarchy

Not all Certificates of Authenticity carry the same weight.

1. Artist's estate / foundation COA (when the foundation still issues them). Strongest. Authority backed by direct knowledge of the artist's body of work and by the threat of fiduciary liability.
2. Catalogue raisonné committee COA. Strong. The committee has compared the work to the documented oeuvre.
3. Major auction-house cataloging. Strong with explicit attribution; weak with "Attributed to" language. The house has done its own due diligence; it provides a limited authenticity warranty (typically 5 years) on full attributions.
4. Recognized scholar / specialist COA. Variable. Strong if the scholar is the leading authority and writes a detailed letter; weak if the COA is a one-page form.
5. Dealer COA. Variable. Strong if the dealer is a CINOA/ADAA member with reputation at stake; weak if the dealer is unknown.
6. Third-party authentication service COA (varies enormously by service and category). Some are gold standard for their category (PSA/CGC for cards, JSA/PSA/DNA/BAS for autographs); some are paper-thin.
7. Seller-issued COA from an unknown entity. Functionally worthless. May actively reduce value by signaling that the seller felt one was needed.

Modern Risks — Deepfakes and AI

Authentication faces new threats from generative AI. Synthetic photographs of "the artist holding the work," fabricated Instagram historical accounts, AI-generated estate paperwork, and synthetic period-style ephemera are real and growing. Treat any "fresh from the artist's studio" story with elevated skepticism. Demand multi-source corroboration; prefer institutional provenance over individual provenance.

Workflow — A Pre-Purchase Authentication Checklist

For any acquisition above the user's significant-spend threshold (define as 5–10% of annual collecting budget):

1. Establish the seller. ADAA / CINOA member dealer? Major auction house? Private treaty through a known intermediary? Unvetted online seller? The seller is the first signal.
2. Demand provenance. A documented chain from artist/manufacturer to seller. Ask explicitly: "Walk me through the ownership history. Who consigned this to you, and what came with it?" A confident seller answers; an evasive one signals caution.
3. Check the major databases. Art Loss Register (for art), IFAR (for stolen-works research), Interpol stolen-works database. None of these are exhaustive, but they catch the obvious.
4. Run the catalog raisonné check if one exists for the artist. Inclusion is strong evidence; exclusion is a question, not a verdict.
5. Verify the COA chain. Is the COA from a body that still authenticates? (Many foundations have stopped — Pollock-Krasner, Warhol, Calder Foundation — after lawsuits. A COA from a defunct committee is still meaningful as historical evidence but cannot be reissued or extended.)
6. For very high-value items, commission independent forensic analysis before final payment. XRF, FTIR, dendrochronology — depending on the medium. Reputable sellers expect this and price it in; sellers who resist forensic analysis are signaling.
7. Buy from sellers who give you 5 working days for independent review. Anyone pushing for immediate close is creating urgency for a reason.

Connoisseur ─── The Eye Beats the Document

The trained eye catches what paperwork misses and what science arrives at slowly. A Pollock looks like a Pollock when held under raking light at three feet — the drip cadence, the layering, the way the canvas pulled the medium. A forger can buy period canvas and period pigment and study photographs for years and still cannot fake the unconscious decisions Pollock made in front of his canvas. Documents and forensic analysis are two crucial legs of the triangle. The eye is the third.

Allocator ─── The Discount on Provenance Gaps

A complete provenance can add 30–60% to a piece's auction estimate. A gap between 1933 and 1945 in a European painting can subtract 40% — or trigger restitution litigation that subtracts 100%. "Private collection, Europe" with no further detail conventionally signals a 15–25% discount to the same work with documented chain. The cost of independent forensic analysis on a piece in the $50K+ range is $2–5K — meaningfully less than the typical bid-ask spread caused by uncertainty. Do the work; price the certainty.
