npbuilds Concrete Detail — The Telling Detail
"Show don't tell" is the most frequently given and least well understood piece of writing advice. It does not mean "never tell." It means: when you want the reader to feel something, provide the sensory and dramatic evidence that produces the feeling, rather than naming the feeling directly. Telling has its own legitimate uses — transitions, logistics, summary. The craft is knowing when to show, when to tell, and how to make showing do the heavy lifting.

The Objective Correlative
T.S. Eliot defined this as "a set of objects, a situation, a chain of events which shall be the formula of that particular emotion." The term sounds academic but the idea is simple: find the external facts that produce the internal emotion.
Don't write "she was lonely." Write the concrete detail that produces loneliness in the reader: the single place setting at the table, the phone with no missed calls, the second toothbrush still in the holder six months after.
The objective correlative is the mechanism behind all effective showing. The writer creates the conditions for emotion; the reader experiences the emotion.
The Telling Detail
One well-chosen, specific detail can replace paragraphs of description. The "telling" detail is one that implies a larger truth — it's a window into a whole system.
"He wore a $4,000 suit and shoes with worn-down heels." Two details, one specific contrast. The reader infers an entire character: someone who projects wealth but is actually struggling. No narrator commentary needed.
Chekhov described short fiction as "the casual telling of a nuclear experience in an ordinary life, rendered with immediate and telling detail." The detail is "telling" because it tells the reader something beyond its literal content.
The Ladder of Abstraction

- Abstract: "She felt grief."
- General concrete: "She cried."
- Specific concrete: "She cried in the parking lot of the Safeway, holding a bag of groceries, the eggs probably broken."
- Telling detail: "The eggs were broken. She could feel the yolk soaking through the paper bag."
Each step down the ladder increases vividness and emotional engagement. The bottom rung doesn't name the emotion at all — it trusts the reader.
Sensory Specificity
Engage more than just sight. Most weak description is vision-only. Strong prose uses:
- Sound: The creak of a floor, the hum of fluorescent lights, the absence of birdsong
- Touch/texture: The grit of sand in a shoe, the slickness of a wet railing, the weight of a sleeping child
- Smell: The most memory-linked sense. A single smell can establish setting more powerfully than a paragraph of visual description.
- Taste: Used sparingly but powerfully — copper taste of fear, staleness of recycled airplane air
The teaching framework: in every important scene, identify at least two senses. If a scene relies entirely on visual description, it's working at half power.
When Telling Is Better Than Showing
"Show don't tell" is not absolute. Telling is the right choice for:
- Transitions and logistics: Getting characters from A to B when nothing eventful happens. "Three months passed" is fine.
- Summary passages: What happens between scenes. A fully "shown" novel would be enormously bloated.
- Context that doesn't carry emotional weight: "He was forty-three, divorced, and lived in Spokane." No need to show this.
- Pacing: Sometimes you need to move fast. Telling compresses time; showing expands it.
The rule of thumb: show for drama; tell for information. The turning points, the emotionally significant moments, the character revelations — these get shown. The connective tissue between them can be told.
When This Applies
- The user asks about "show don't tell"
- Prose feels vague, abstract, or over-explained
- A passage tells the reader what to feel instead of creating the conditions for feeling
- Description relies only on sight and neglects other senses
- The user wants to make their writing more vivid or immersive
- A draft has the opposite problem — showing everything, even transitions and logistics
