A civilization is not a flag and a set of borders. It's a system of answers to universal human questions: How do we govern? What do we believe? Who has power? What do we owe each other? How do we relate to the unknown? The specific answers a culture gives to these questions — shaped by geography, resources, history, and the fantasy system — is what makes it feel real.
This skill provides the methodology for designing cultures that feel inevitable rather than invented.
The Seven Pillars of Culture
Every culture can be described through seven interlocking systems. You don't need to fully detail all seven for every culture, but you should know where each one sits, even if only at a surface level.
1. Governance
How decisions get made and authority is distributed:

How resources flow and who controls them:
- Production base: What does this culture make? Agriculture, crafts, extraction, trade, raiding?
- Exchange system: Markets, barter, gift economy, tribute, redistribution?
- Wealth concentration: Egalitarian, stratified, or something between?
- Key resource: What single resource shapes this economy most? (Often the fantasy system's fuel)
Key question: What does this culture have that others want, and what do they need that they can't produce?
3. Religion / Cosmology
How this culture explains the universe:
- Origin story: Where do they believe they came from?
- Moral framework: What behaviors does the cosmology reward and punish?
- Relationship to the fantasy system: Is it divine, natural, dangerous, or mundane?
- Ritual life: What do they do regularly to maintain their relationship with the sacred?
- Heterodoxy: What beliefs does the mainstream suppress, and who holds them?
Key question: What does this culture believe about the thing they're wrong about? (Reference the revelation architecture)
4. Social Structure
How people are ranked, grouped, and separated:
- Stratification axis: Birth, wealth, ability, age, fantasy-system access, or achievement?
- Mobility: Can people change their station? How? What's the cost?
- Gender and family: How are family units structured? What roles are gendered?
- In-group / out-group: Who counts as "us"? How are outsiders treated?
Key question: If you're born at the bottom of this society, what's your best path up?
5. Military / Defense
How this culture protects itself and projects power:
- Military tradition: Professional army, citizen militia, warrior caste, hired mercenaries?
- Relationship to the fantasy system: Does the military use it? Control access to it? Fear it?
- Doctrine: Offensive, defensive, guerrilla, naval, magical, diplomatic?
- Veterans: What happens to soldiers after service? This reveals the culture's values.
Key question: What is this culture's worst nightmare — the threat they're least prepared for?
6. Knowledge / Technology
How information is created, preserved, and transmitted:
- Literacy: Who can read? Is writing common, restricted, or sacred?
- Knowledge institutions: Schools, apprenticeships, oral tradition, secret societies?
- Technological level: What tools do they have? What can't they build yet?
- Relationship to the fantasy system: Does it supplement or replace technology?
- Historical memory: How far back do they remember? Written records, oral genealogies, ruins?
Key question: What important thing has this culture forgotten, and what would change if they remembered?
7. Art and Expression
What this culture considers beautiful, meaningful, or worth preserving:
- Dominant art forms: Music, visual art, architecture, storytelling, body modification?
- Aesthetic values: Ornate vs. austere, naturalistic vs. abstract, individual vs. communal?
- What's forbidden: What artistic expression is suppressed? (This is often more revealing than what's celebrated)
- Relationship to the fantasy system: Does it inspire art? Is art a way of channeling it?
Building a Culture
The Constraint-First Method
Don't start with "what's cool." Start with constraints:
- Geography: Where do they live? (Load geography-ecology knowledge)
- Resources: What do they have? What do they lack?
- Fantasy system access: How does it affect them?
- Neighbors: Who borders them? What's the relationship?
- History depth: How long have they existed?
Then ask: given these constraints, what kind of culture would inevitably form? The best cultures feel like the only possible answer to their geographic and historical situation.
The Contradiction Method
Every interesting culture contains at least one internal contradiction:
- A peaceful people with a terrible military tradition they're ashamed of
- A theocracy whose priests secretly know the religion is built on a misunderstanding
- A culture that values individual freedom but whose economy depends on a form of bondage
- A technologically advanced society with a deep distrust of their own creations
The contradiction creates internal tension, which creates stories.
The Outsider Test
Your culture is real enough when you can answer: What would a visitor from a different culture in this world notice first? What would confuse them? What would disgust them? What would they admire?
Common Mistakes
- Monocultures. An entire civilization that's just "the warrior people" or "the scholarly people." Real cultures are complex. The warriors have poets. The scholars have corrupt officials.
- Earth cultures with a coat of paint. "These are basically Vikings but they ride lizards." Push further. Let the constraints generate something that couldn't exist on Earth.
- Values without costs. "This culture values honor above all." Okay — what does that cost them? What do they sacrifice for honor? What do they fail to see because they're looking through the honor lens?
- No internal dissent. Every culture has people who disagree with the mainstream. Dissidents, reformers, heretics, criminals, artists. These voices make the culture feel lived-in.
- Fantasy system as decoration. If magic exists, it reshapes everything — governance, economy, military, religion, social structure. A culture that has magic but is otherwise medieval Europe hasn't thought through the implications.
Cross-Domain Connections
- Writing/narrative-craft/dialogue: Cultural values constrain how characters speak — what's sayable, what's taboo, what requires euphemism. Load cultural communication norms before writing dialogue for characters from this culture.
- Writing/rhetoric: A culture's persuasion conventions shape in-world rhetoric. Collectivist cultures emphasize communal appeals; individualist cultures emphasize personal achievement. In-world speeches should reflect the target audience's cultural values.
