The Colonial Systems
Not all colonialisms were the same. The administrative model shaped the decolonization process:

Phases of Decolonization
Phase 1 — Asian Independence (1945-1954)
India/Pakistan (1947), Indonesia (1949), Vietnam's war against France (1946-1954). The first wave was driven by mature nationalist movements that predated WWII, Japanese occupation that shattered the myth of European invincibility, and war-exhausted European powers unable to reimpose control.
Phase 2 — African Independence (1956-1968)
Ghana (1957) opened the floodgate. By 1968, most of sub-Saharan Africa was independent. Driven by pan-Africanism (Nkrumah, Nyerere), Cold War competition for allies, and the realization by colonial powers that holding colonies was becoming costlier than releasing them.

- Weak institutions: Colonial institutions were designed for extraction, not governance; many new states had no functioning bureaucracy, judiciary, or tax system

The debate: Are post-colonial state failures caused primarily by colonial legacies (Mamdani, Rodney) or by post-independence governance choices (Bates, Collier)? The answer is usually "both, in proportions that vary by case."
Neo-Colonialism and Dependency
Kwame Nkrumah coined "neo-colonialism" (1965) to describe how newly independent states remained economically dependent on former colonial powers. The dependency school (Frank, Wallerstein, Amin) argued that the global economy structurally disadvantages the periphery:
- Terms of trade: Raw material exporters perpetually lose relative to manufactured goods importers
- Debt dependency: Loans with conditions that reproduce colonial-era economic structures (structural adjustment programs)

Self-Determination vs. State Viability
The central tension of decolonization: the right of peoples to determine their own political status (self-determination) vs. the practical requirements for a functioning state (viability). Key questions:
- Who is "a people"? (Ethnic group? Linguistic community? All inhabitants of a colonial border?)
- At what scale? (If Nigeria can secede from Britain, can Biafra secede from Nigeria?)

- What institutions were inherited? (Functioning bureaucracy? Judiciary? Tax base?)
- What post-colonial legacies persist? (Borders, economic structures, cultural divisions?)
