Turchin's Structural-Demographic Theory

Elite Overproduction
Turchin's most distinctive concept: when there are more people seeking elite positions (wealth, political power, prestigious careers) than positions available, intra-elite competition intensifies. This produces:
- Political polarization (competing elite factions)
- Radicalization (frustrated elites become revolutionaries)
- Institutional dysfunction (elites capture institutions for factional advantage)
- State fiscal crisis (elite tax resistance)
Modern application: Turchin argues the US is in a stagflation/pre-crisis phase, with rising elite overproduction (credential inflation, wealth concentration at the top, intense partisan competition) echoing patterns seen before the English Civil War, the French Revolution, and the American Civil War.
The Malthusian Framework
Thomas Malthus (1798) argued that population grows geometrically while food production grows arithmetically, creating periodic crises when population outstrips resources.
Where it holds: Pre-industrial agrarian societies were broadly Malthusian — population growth repeatedly hit ecological ceilings, triggering famine, disease, and war that reduced population, starting the cycle again.
Where it breaks: The Industrial Revolution shattered the Malthusian ceiling. Since ~1800, productivity growth has outpaced population growth (in industrialized countries). The demographic transition — declining birth rates as societies urbanize and educate women — further weakened Malthusian dynamics.

The shift from high birth/high death rates to low birth/low death rates:
