The Security Dilemma
When one state increases its security (building arms, forming alliances), it decreases the security of others — who respond in kind. The result is an arms race neither side wanted. This mechanism explains much of the escalation before WWI.
Hegemonic Stability
A dominant power provides public goods (open trade routes, security, monetary stability) that benefit the system. When the hegemon declines, these goods erode. Britain's navy kept sea lanes open 1815–1914; the US did the same after 1945.
The Democratic Peace
