The Sourcing Pipeline

A great collection is not built by waiting for the right piece to appear in your inbox. It is built by maintaining presence across multiple sourcing channels simultaneously, building reputation as a serious buyer in each, and being ready when something appears.

The pipeline runs from individual estate sales and regional auction houses up to the global majors. The arbitrage flows downward — pieces emerge from estates, get picked up by regional houses, get noticed by national specialists, and end up at majors. Catching pieces earlier in this chain is the principal way to find under-priced supply.

Channel-Category Fit

Different channels concentrate different asset classes. Knowing the fit is the difference between hunting effectively and wasting cycles.

Major Auction Houses

Regional Houses

The undervalued layer of the auction market. A category-specific item sold at a general regional house typically prices 30–50% below what the same item would price at a category-specialist major. The reason: regional houses' bidder pools are not specialists in every category.

The aggregators that surface regional inventory:

• LiveAuctioneers — thousands of regional houses, unified live-bidding platform
• Invaluable — similar to LiveAuctioneers; some house exclusives
• AuctionZip — long-running, more US regional focus
• EstateSales.net — physical estate sales by date and ZIP code

The arbitrage strategy: search aggregators with category-specific keywords; bid against the regional house's underbidder pool; ship the win to a major-house pre-consignment specialist for an opinion or to a vetted dealer for resale.

Online Marketplaces

• eBay — sports cards under $5K, Pokémon, modern memorabilia, books, lower-tier watches; volume is massive but signal-to-noise is poor
• WhatNot — live-streaming auction format; strong on sports cards, Pokémon, comics
• TCGplayer / Cardmarket — Magic: The Gathering and other TCG card singles; specialist pricing
• Discogs — vinyl records; both marketplace and the dominant database
• Chrono24 — watches; mid-tier market dominant
• AbeBooks — rare books; ABAA dealers and aggregated dealer inventory
• Heritage HA.com online marketplace — Heritage's daily / weekly online auctions plus signature sales

Community Channels

• Discord servers — increasingly the front door for high-end watches, comics, cards. Trust-mediated; payment via escrow services; reputation tracked across servers.
• Instagram — visual-first; many dealers post inventory; private treaty negotiations via DM
• Forum communities — Watchuseek, CGC Comics Forum, Blowout Cards forum, BoardGameGeek for related categories; high-signal but lower-volume
• Subreddits — r/sportscards, r/comicbooks, r/watches, r/whisky, r/MagicTCG marketplace threads

Dealer Networks

The most reliable channel for consistent supply, especially in mature markets. Cultivating 3–5 dealers per asset class — visiting their shops, attending their booth at major shows, calling regularly — is the discipline that produces consistent acquisition flow.

• The National Sports Collectors Convention — sports cards, memorabilia
• San Diego Comic-Con / NYCC / WonderCon — comics, pop culture
• Watches and Wonders Geneva, the Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair — watches
• VinExpo, La Place de Bordeaux events — wine
• The Brimfield Antique Show, Round Top, Marburger Farm — antiques, decorative arts, picking

The "Fresh to Market" Premium

Items emerging from a 30+ year private collection price 20–40% above the same item that has been in regular auction rotation. The premium is informational — a piece untouched by recent market sophistication has not been priced by that sophistication. Some of those untouched pieces will be undervalued; the premium is the market's bet that more of them are undervalued than overvalued.

The corollary: the discount on a piece that has been "shopped" extensively is real. If a piece has appeared at three major-house sales in five years and not sold above estimate, the market is signaling. Don't ignore it.

Picker Networks

Every great dealer is supplied by a network of pickers — independent sourcers who scour estate sales, regional auctions, garage sales, and antique malls for items priced below market. Pickers are not collectors; their game is volume and turn.

The collector's relationship to picker networks:

• As a dealer-supplier client: a great dealer may offer pieces to favored clients before pieces hit the dealer's retail floor — first-look access. Cultivating this status is multi-year work.
• As a direct picker yourself: visiting estate sales, regional houses, and pickers' markets directly. The skill is what dealers call "the eye" — the trained recognition of value in undifferentiated supply. Develops with thousands of hours of looking.

Estate Sale Timing

• Friday morning (often pre-open): dealers and pickers. The serious supply is gone by noon.
• Saturday: retail buyers; some markdown
• Sunday: deeper markdowns, often half-price; the leftovers from the previous two days

The collector who wants picker-tier inventory has to be there at 7am on a Friday in someone else's neighborhood — a discipline most people aren't willing to maintain. That's why it works.

Workflow — Building a Sourcing Pipeline

For a serious collector in any asset class:

1. Subscribe to the major-house alerts for the category — Christie's, Sotheby's, Phillips, Heritage send pre-sale catalogs and lot alerts
2. Set up saved searches on the aggregators — LiveAuctioneers and Invaluable allow keyword alerts that fire daily
3. Set up eBay saved searches with daily email — even for high-end items, eBay occasionally surfaces underpriced supply
4. Join 1–3 community channels — Discord, forums, subreddits — for real-time market intelligence
5. Identify 3–5 dealers to cultivate over multi-year horizon; visit at major shows; check in quarterly
6. Visit 1 regional auction per quarter at minimum — pattern recognition only develops with repeated exposure
7. Document everything — every comp, every dealer interaction, every lot pass-through builds the knowledge base

Workflow — Hunting a Specific Piece

When the user has a specific target (e.g., "I want a high-grade Hulk #181" or "I want a 1955 doubled-die Lincoln in PR-65 RD"):

1. Define the target precisely — specific issue, grade range, acceptable provenance, all-in budget ceiling
2. Identify the channels where that target surfaces — category-specific majors for the highest grades; regionals and dealers for mid-tier; community channels for unusual pieces
3. Set up alerts on all relevant channels
4. Maintain patience and discipline — the right piece comes; the right piece always comes; the user must be ready when it does
5. Have the all-in budget pre-staged — if the user can't move within 7 days of seeing the right piece, the wait was wasted

Connoisseur ─── The Eye Is Built by Showing Up

There is no shortcut to developing the trained recognition that distinguishes a great example from an ordinary one. Papaleo studied thousands of Daytonas before publishing his catalogue raisonné; Bacs has handled tens of thousands of watches by hand. Each hour at an estate sale, each regional auction sat through, each booth at a major show walked carefully — these compound into the eye that catches the under-priced piece across a room. There is no replacement for cumulative exposure.

Allocator ─── Sourcing Cost Is the Hidden Line Item

A serious collector spends 100–300 hours a year on sourcing — visiting shows, monitoring channels, evaluating candidates, traveling to viewings. At a typical collector's hourly value, this is $20K–$200K of unbilled time annually. Treat this as a real cost: the time spent sourcing is the cost of access to under-priced supply. Either the access pays off (the user systematically buys below retail through this work) or it doesn't. Track the spread between estimated retail-equivalent value and the user's all-in acquisition cost over time. If the spread compounds positively, the sourcing labor is positive ROI. If not, route through dealers and pay retail; reclaim the hours.
