What En Primeur Is
En primeur is the Bordeaux futures market — buyers commit to purchase a wine while it is still in barrel at the producing château, approximately 18 months before bottling. Delivery occurs at bottling.
The system was created for châteaux to fund production between harvest and bottling. Today it functions as a sophisticated pricing mechanism that simultaneously:
- Allows châteaux to lock in revenue
- Allows négociants (the merchants who buy and resell) to forward-distribute wine

La Place de Bordeaux

Wine ordered at en primeur is paid for in advance (or via deposit). The buyer's claim is against:

If the négociant becomes insolvent between order and delivery, the buyer may face loss. Major négociant failures have happened. Buying from established, well-capitalized négociants is the standard risk mitigation.
Vintage Quality Reassessment
The April Primeurs Week tastings are from barrel, 18 months before bottling. Wines change in barrel. A vintage that tasted promising in April may be reassessed downward by physical release. The 2009 vintage was widely loved at en primeur and largely validated; the 2010 vintage was similarly loved and largely validated; the 2011-2013 vintages saw reassessment between en primeur and bottling.

Historically, First Growths were significantly cheaper at en primeur than at physical release.
