npbuilds Gender and Sexuality History — The Hidden Half
For most of recorded history, women's experiences were systematically excluded from historical narratives written by and about men. Gender history does not simply "add women" to existing narratives — it fundamentally transforms them. Joan Scott's foundational insight: gender is not a biological fact but a "useful category of historical analysis" — a system of social relations that structures power, labor, knowledge, and identity differently in every society. Understanding gender as historically constructed (not natural or fixed) opens up the entire past to new questions.
This skill was added after Spelunker research identified gender and sexuality history as one of the most productive fields since the 1970s and a critical gap in the original design.
When This Applies

The Three Waves of Gender History
Wave 1 — Women's History (1960s-1970s)
Core project: Recovery — documenting women's lives, contributions, and experiences that traditional history ignored.
Key contributions: Women's labor (both paid and unpaid), women's political action (not just suffrage but daily resistance), women's intellectual production (often anonymous or attributed to men).
Limit: Tended to treat "women" as a unified category, missing differences of class, race, and culture.
Wave 2 — Gender History (1980s-1990s)
Core project: Analysis — gender as a system of power relations, not just women's experience.
Joan Scott's intervention (1986): Gender is "a primary way of signifying relationships of power." It is not about biology but about the social meanings attached to sexual difference — and these meanings vary across time and place.
Key insight: Gender structures everything, not just women's lives. War, politics, economics, and religion are all gendered — they operate differently for men and women, and the system of gender shapes how they function.
Wave 3 — Intersectionality and Beyond (2000s-present)
Core project: Complexity — gender intersects with race, class, sexuality, disability, and colonialism.
Key figures: Kimberle Crenshaw (intersectionality), Judith Butler (gender performativity), postcolonial feminists (Chandra Mohanty, Gayatri Spivak).
Current frontiers: History of masculinity (what does it mean to be a man in different historical contexts?), transgender history, the history of the body as a site of historical analysis.
Gender as Historical Variable
Gender is not fixed across time or space. What it means to be a "man" or "woman" varies enormously:

How Gender History Transforms Other Fields
Gender is not a separate sub-field — it is a lens that transforms every other wing of Wan Shi Tong's library:
- Political history: Wars are fought by gendered bodies; state power is exercised through gender regulation (controlling reproduction, marriage, inheritance)
- Economic history: Unpaid domestic labor is the largest form of labor in history; industrialization reorganized gender divisions of labor
- Military history: War remakes gender roles (women in factories, Rosie the Riveter, women combatants) and enforces them (militarized masculinity)
- Intellectual history: Who gets to produce knowledge is gendered; women's exclusion from universities shaped what questions were asked
Diagnostic Framework
When analyzing gender in historical context:
- What are the gender norms of this society? (And how are they enforced?)
- Who does what work? (Both paid and unpaid — domestic labor is work)
- Who has legal/political rights? (And how do they differ by gender?)
- What is the sexual/reproductive regime? (Marriage, contraception, sexuality regulation)
- Who is writing this history? (Gender of the historian shapes the questions asked)
- What changes when you center women's experience? (Does the standard narrative survive?)
