The Three-Step Method

- What is genuinely different

Intelligence Analysis Methods
Intelligence analysts have developed some of the most rigorous methods for using historical reasoning under uncertainty:
- Analysis of Competing Hypotheses (ACH): List all plausible hypotheses; evaluate each piece of evidence against all hypotheses simultaneously; reject hypotheses inconsistent with the evidence. Prevents anchoring on a single explanation.
- Structured Analogy: Systematically compare the current case to multiple historical cases; weight each analogy by structural similarity; synthesize. More rigorous than ad hoc analogy selection.
