Autofiction
The dominant literary mode of the current era. Blends autobiography and fiction — the narrator shares the author's name, biographical details, and experiences, but the work is structured and shaped as fiction.

When to Use

- Managing reader assumptions about truth — everything feels "real" even when invented

Fragmented / Collage Narrative
Stories assembled from discrete pieces — aphorisms, vignettes, lists, documents, images — without conventional transitions or continuous narrative thread.

- White space between fragments carries as much meaning as the fragments themselves
- The reader assembles the whole — the act of assembly IS the reading experience

Metafiction
Fiction that is aware of itself as fiction — that foregrounds its own construction, questions the nature of storytelling, or includes the author as a character.
How It Works
- The text acknowledges its own artifice — characters know they're in a story, the narrator addresses construction choices
- The boundary between fiction and reality becomes the subject
- Often includes the writing process itself as narrative content

Stories told through found documents: letters, emails, text messages, transcripts, social media posts, official reports, scientific papers.
How It Works
- Each document has its own voice, format, and implied reader
- The reader becomes detective, assembling truth from partial and possibly unreliable documents
- Format constraints create natural subtext — what a character writes in a letter differs from what they'd say aloud
When to Use
When multiple perspectives are needed without omniscient narration. When the form of communication itself matters (email vs. letter vs. text). When institutional voice (reports, memos) creates ironic contrast with personal experience.
Salesses's Decolonized Craft Lens
Matthew Salesses's Craft in the Real World challenges the assumption that Western craft conventions (conflict-driven plot, three-act structure, individual protagonist) are universal. His key reframes:
- Plot: Not necessarily conflict-driven. Can be organized by transformation, accumulation, or departure-and-return.
- Character: Not necessarily individual. Collective protagonists, communal narrators, and characters defined by relationship rather than psychology.
- Structure: Not necessarily the arc. Circular, rhythmic, and associative structures from non-Western traditions are equally valid.
- Believability: Culturally constructed. What counts as "realistic" depends on whose reality you center.
This lens doesn't invalidate Western craft — it reveals it as one tradition among many, opening space for hybrid forms that draw on multiple traditions.
Relationship to Other Skills
