The Reserved List — The Floor
In 1996, Wizards of the Coast formally committed never to reprint specific cards from the early sets — the Reserved List. The list includes selected rares and uncommons from:
- Alpha (1993)
- Beta (1993)
- Unlimited (1993)
- Arabian Nights (1993)
- Antiquities (1994)
- Legends (1994)
- The Dark (1994)
- Fallen Empires (1994)
- Ice Age (1995, partial)
- Selected later cards through Mercadian Masques (2000)
The Reserved List is the price floor for MTG collecting. These cards cannot be reprinted in tournament-legal versions; the supply is fixed. As of 2025, the Reserved List remains in effect; WOTC has reaffirmed it multiple times under collector pressure.
The Reserved List's economic effect: the Power Nine (Black Lotus, Time Walk, Ancestral Recall, Mox Pearl/Sapphire/Jet/Ruby/Emerald, Timetwister) and other Reserved-List staples behave like Liv-ex blue chips in wine — fixed supply, defined demand, multi-decade value compounding.
Alpha vs Beta vs Unlimited
The 1993 launch set was printed in three rapidly-released versions:
- Alpha (Limited Edition Alpha, 1993) — first printing. Distinctive rounded corners (more rounded than later cards). Print run
2.6M cards total (7,000 of each rare). The trophy printing. - Beta (Limited Edition Beta, 1993) — second printing. Standard rounded corners (less rounded than Alpha). Print run ~7.3M cards.
- Unlimited (1993) — third printing. White-bordered cards (Alpha and Beta were black-bordered). Print run substantial; still Reserved List for many cards.
Identifying Alpha vs Beta: corner radius is the canonical tell. Alpha corners are visibly more rounded; Beta corners are more squared (though still rounded compared to modern cards). The back of the card shows the same Magic logo across all three, but the borders differ — Alpha and Beta are black-bordered; Unlimited is white-bordered.
Premium structure:
- Alpha Black Lotus: ~$1.5M to $3M+ at gem-mint grade
- Beta Black Lotus: ~$400K to $800K+ at gem-mint
- Unlimited Black Lotus: ~$50K to $150K at gem-mint
The order-of-magnitude gap between Alpha and Unlimited reflects both the print-run difference and the trophy status of the first printing.
Condition Vocabulary — NM / LP / MP / HP / DMG
Unlike sports and Pokémon, MTG uses a retailer-standard condition vocabulary at the raw level, not a 1–10 numeric scale (unless slabbed):
- NM (Near Mint): pristine; the standard for "premium" raw
- LP (Lightly Played): minor wear; subtle whitening on edges or small surface marks
- MP (Moderately Played): visible play wear, edge wear, possible minor crease
- HP (Heavily Played): significant wear, creasing, surface damage
- DMG (Damaged): water damage, tears, alterations, anything compromising structural integrity
The "rule of three": industry shorthand that says a card with three or fewer minor flaws can still be NM. Beyond three, it moves to LP. This is a retailer convention; slabbed grading via BGS/PSA/CGC uses the 1–10 numeric scale.
Slabbing
Slabbing exists for MTG but is less universally adopted than for sports / Pokémon. BGS, PSA, and CGC all grade MTG.
- BGS is preferred by many vintage MTG collectors because subgrades matter on Alpha/Beta where centering and surface preservation are the primary differentiators
- PSA has gained share recently
- CGC has aggressive Pokémon presence but lower MTG share
For Reserved List staples in playable grades, NM raw often trades comparably to NM slabbed because the player market values the raw card for actual tournament use. For Alpha / Beta / Unlimited trophy cards, slabbing becomes important because the price tier moves the card out of playable-use territory into pure collectible.
The Power Nine
The nine most powerful and most coveted cards from Alpha/Beta/Unlimited:
- Black Lotus — generates 3 mana of any color; the most powerful single card in MTG history
- Time Walk — extra turn
- Ancestral Recall — draw 3 cards
- Mox Pearl — generates 1 white mana, free
- Mox Sapphire — generates 1 blue mana, free
- Mox Jet — generates 1 black mana, free
- Mox Ruby — generates 1 red mana, free
- Mox Emerald — generates 1 green mana, free
- Timetwister — shuffle hands and graveyards into deck, draw 7
All nine are Reserved List. All nine are banned in modern tournament play (except in Vintage). Owning a full Power Nine in any condition is the canonical MTG trophy collection.

Foils
Premium foil cards from major sets carry collectible value separate from the regular printing. Foiled Power Nine in From the Vault sets carry minor collectible interest; original-era foils (Urza's Legacy onward) carry significant interest.
Promos and Convention Cards
Various promotional and convention-distribution cards from the 1990s-2000s carry collectible value — Mercadian Masques convention promos, San Diego Comic-Con exclusives, judge foils.
Modern Master Sets and Reprints
Modern reprint sets (Modern Masters, Vintage Masters, From the Vault series) reprint non-Reserved-List cards. These reprints typically depress the value of original printings, sometimes dramatically. The Reserved List exists specifically to prevent this dynamic on the trophy tier.

The Player vs Collector Distinction
Unlike most other collectibles, MTG cards have active tournament use. A NM Reserved List card is simultaneously a collectible asset and a playable tool in formats like Legacy and Vintage. This creates dual demand:
- Player demand values NM condition but does not require slabbing; cares about playability
- Collector demand values slabbed high-grade examples; the card may never be played
The dual demand supports the price floor — even if collectible interest weakens, tournament-level demand persists for Reserved List staples in Vintage / Legacy formats.
Connoisseur ─── The Reserved List Is the Most Important Word in MTG Collecting
Knowing whether a card is on the Reserved List answers most of the price-floor question. A Reserved List staple in NM condition has a defined floor; a non-Reserved-List card from the same era trades at whatever the next reprint will allow. The collector who has internalized the Reserved List as the first filter on every card avoids 80% of the structural value traps in MTG. Allocator ─── Alpha Compounds Like Bordeaux First Growth; Unlimited Like Second Tier
Alpha Black Lotus in gem mint is functionally the Lafite of MTG — a fixed-supply, multi-decade compounding asset with deep buyer base and increasing cultural status. Unlimited Black Lotus is the Second Growth equivalent — same Reserved List protection, much larger supply, lower trajectory. The Alpha vs Unlimited spread (3-10× depending on grade and timing) is the equivalent of First Growth vs Second Growth Bordeaux. Allocate to Alpha for the trophy compound; allocate to Unlimited if the trophy is out of budget and the user wants exposure to the asset class.
