Scope

Old Masters traditionally covers European painting from approximately 1300 to 1800 — late medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassical. Northern European masters (Van Eyck, Bosch, Bruegel, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Hals), Italian masters (Giotto, Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, Tiepolo), Spanish masters (Velázquez, Murillo, Goya), French masters (Poussin, Watteau, Fragonard, David), and beyond.

The category is defined by:

• Workshop production — many "by" attributions are in fact collaborative; major masters had studios with assistants who produced parts of paintings sold under the master's name
• Multiple-state restoration — paintings 300-700 years old have typically been cleaned, relined, retouched, varnished, and revarnished multiple times
• Attribution disputes — connoisseurship history is dense; scholarly opinions have shifted multiple times on major works
• Provenance over centuries — best-documented works have provenance from creation to present; many have multi-decade gaps

The Attribution Hierarchy (Critical)

The catalog-language ladder is more consequential in Old Masters than anywhere else in collecting. From collector/references/attribution-hierarchy.md:

• "Rembrandt" (full attribution) → full warranty; major-house 5-year limited authenticity guarantee
• "Attributed to Rembrandt" → withdrawn warranty; 30-50% of full attribution value
• "Studio of Rembrandt" → produced by his workshop with possible/probable Rembrandt involvement; 50-70% reduction from full
• "Circle of Rembrandt" → unidentified hand of the period working closely in the style; 70-85% reduction
• "Follower of Rembrandt" → working from the example, often later; 85-95% reduction
• "Manner of Rembrandt" → in the style, possibly much later; 90-95+% reduction
• "After Rembrandt" → direct copy of a known Rembrandt; reproduction-tier value

For Rembrandt specifically, the Rembrandt Research Project (RRP) has spent decades deattributing works previously catalogued as fully by the master. A piece that was "Rembrandt" in a 1970 sale catalogue may now be "Circle of Rembrandt" or "Follower of Rembrandt." The market has adjusted accordingly.

Panel Painting Science

Many Old Masters are painted on wooden panels (especially Northern European masters before the late 16th century when canvas became standard). Panels require specific authentication and conservation disciplines:

Dendrochronology

The science of dating wood by tree-ring patterns. Applied to panel paintings, dendrochronology can:

• Establish the earliest possible date of a panel by analyzing the rings of the tree from which the panel was cut
• Confirm regional origin — Northern European oak vs Baltic oak vs Italian poplar have distinct ring patterns
• Identify panels from the same tree — which may indicate same workshop or close studio relationship

Dendrochronology is non-destructive (the dendrochronologist examines the edge of the panel under magnification). For high-value Old Masters, dendrochronological analysis is routine.

Cradling

Many older panels have been cradled — reinforced from the back with a wooden grid attached to prevent warping. Cradling was standard practice in the 18th and 19th centuries. The intervention:

• Stabilizes the panel against environmental humidity changes
• Was sometimes done aggressively, with the original panel thinned to accept the cradle
• Cannot be reversed without further intervention
• Is documented in the condition report

A cradled panel is structurally a different object than an uncradled panel — the original wooden substrate has been altered. This affects value modestly but is universal for early panels.

Splits and Joins

Many large panels are constructed from multiple joined boards. Over centuries, glue joints can fail, producing splits. Restoration history typically includes rejoining, repairing splits with butterfly keys, and addressing paint losses along the seams.

Canvas Conservation

For canvas-supported paintings, the main conservation events are:

Lining (Relining)

The original canvas is backed with a new canvas using adhesive (wax-resin historically; synthetic now). Lining stabilizes flaking, secures tears, and protects the original support. Almost all Old Master canvases have been lined at some point.

Multiple linings can occur over centuries; the painting may have been lined three or four times. Each lining is documented when conservators inspect the verso.

Transfer

In extreme cases, the paint film is transferred to a new support — the original canvas is removed entirely and the paint film attached to a new substrate. This is invasive and rare; documented examples exist in major collections.

Varnish Layering

Old paintings typically have multiple varnish layers from various cleanings and revarnishings over centuries. UV examination reveals varnish age (yellowed, fluorescent under UV) and any retouches done over varnish (later interventions). Cleaning a painting removes recent yellowed varnish; sometimes the cleaning reveals significant changes in color, depth, and detail that older yellowed varnish had obscured.

The conservator's decision about how aggressively to clean is a judgment call — over-cleaning can damage the original paint film; under-cleaning leaves the work visibly aged. Major cleanings are documented in conservation literature.

Provenance Research

The strongest Old Masters provenance traces ownership from creation to present, with documentation:

• Workshop records (rare; some Italian masters' studio inventories survive)
• Commission documentation (for portraits, religious works commissioned by patrons)
• Estate and probate records (auctions of major collections; the Vermeer that emerged in the 19th century from a Dutch family collection)
• Major-collection inventories (Royal Collection, Hermitage, Liechtenstein, Lobkowicz, etc.)
• Auction records (Sotheby's, Christie's auction archives stretching to the 18th century)

The reality: most works have gaps. The serious gaps are 1930-1945 (Nazi-era restitution risk for European works) and 1949-1979 (Cultural Revolution dispersal for Chinese works).

Common Mistakes

1. Reading "Attributed to" as full attribution — the catalog hedge is a structural value indicator
2. Ignoring conservation history — every Old Master has been worked on; the question is what was done and how skillfully
3. Underestimating restitution risk — 1933-1945 European provenance gaps are red flags
4. Buying without dendrochronological / forensic analysis for major works — the analysis cost is small relative to the asset
5. Trusting older catalog attributions — scholarship moves; the 1970s "Rembrandt" may be the 2020s "Circle of Rembrandt"

Connoisseur ─── The Eye Trained on Workshop Production

The hardest skill in Old Masters is distinguishing master's hand from workshop hand. Rembrandt's workshop produced paintings where master and pupil collaborated; the master's contribution might be the head and hands while the pupil painted the drapery. The Rembrandt Research Project spent decades on this distinction; their reattributions are themselves contested. The collector who develops the eye for workshop production reads paintings as collaborative artifacts rather than single-author works — closer to the truth of how 17th-century studios actually operated.

Allocator ─── Attribution Hierarchy Moves Value By Orders of Magnitude

A fully attributed Vermeer would trade above $200M. An "Attributed to Vermeer" trades at $5-30M depending on scholarly support. "Circle of Vermeer" trades at $200K-2M. "After Vermeer" trades at $20-200K. The same image, the same nominal style, four orders of magnitude apart depending on the cataloger's confidence.
