Public Portfolio — One Artifact, Many Years of Credibility

A public artifact — a GitHub repo, a long-form essay, a recorded talk — does not just communicate what you have done; it communicates how you think. For a senior MD aiming at biotech venture, where the audience selects partly for "judgment under uncertainty," a portfolio that demonstrates structured thinking about hard biotech questions is a higher-conviction signal than any line on a resume.

This skill is the strategy layer of what to publish, not the craft of writing each artifact. The compounding asymmetry: one solid public artifact is referenced by recruiters, partners, and colleagues for years.

Key Concepts

What Public Artifacts Actually Signal

A reader of a public portfolio is asking three questions:

1. Can this person think rigorously? — Does the artifact have a structured argument, named assumptions, surfaced unknowns?
2. Does this person think about the right things? — Does the artifact's topic matter to the trajectory the audience is evaluating you for?
3. Will this person ship? — Is the artifact finished and high quality, or half-done and rough? Half-done public artifacts signal worse than no public artifacts.

The Three Tiers of Portfolio Artifact

A senior portfolio benefits from a small number of Tier 1 artifacts (1–3) supported by Tier 2 work and visible Tier 3 activity. The temptation is to over-invest in Tier 3; the leverage is in Tier 1.

What to Publish (For an MD → Biotech VC/Operator Trajectory)

Highest-leverage public artifact types:

1. A diligence-style write-up of a public biotech. Pick a recently-public or pre-IPO biotech; do a structured diligence (clinical, regulatory, valuation, deal). This proves you can do the work of an investor.
2. A methods essay on a clinical-development question. Endpoint selection in [indication], adaptive design tradeoffs, biomarker enrichment math. Proves you can teach what you do.
3. A thesis essay. "Where I think the next decade of [subdomain] is going." Proves you have a thesis — the most-asked question in any VC interview.
4. A working repo / skill library. This Skill Building repo is itself a portfolio artifact — a structured demonstration of how you organize complex domains.
5. A talk recording. Conference, podcast, or panel. Proves you can communicate the work in front of an audience.

What NOT to Publish

The Pinning Strategy

A visitor lands on your GitHub or blog with ~30 seconds of attention. Pin the 1–4 artifacts that prove the thesis. Everything else is supporting material. If your top-pinned items don't telegraph the trajectory in the first 30 seconds, the portfolio is misorganized regardless of how much great work it contains.

Self-Coaching Track

For your situation (MD → biotech VC/operator, with public GitHub for venture interviews):

1. Inventory your existing public artifacts. GitHub repos, blog posts, talks, podcast appearances, papers (yes, peer-reviewed papers count). For each, score on: thesis alignment, completeness, current quality.

2. Pick the 3 flagship artifacts. From the inventory, identify the 3 highest-leverage Tier 1 artifacts you have or could finish in 60 days. Examples for you:

   • This Skill Building repo (the suite library — structured demonstration of how you think across biotech VC, sommelier, investing, etc.)
   • A diligence write-up of a recently-public biotech (a "what I'd ask if I were on the IC" essay)
   • A thesis essay on physician-judgment-as-edge in early-stage biotech investing

3. Audit the GitHub README and pinned repos. Visitors land on your GitHub profile first. The README must telegraph the trajectory. The 6 pinned repos must support it. If the pins are dominated by side-projects or tutorials, re-pin.

4. Schedule one Tier 1 artifact per quarter. Don't try to ship many at once. One quality artifact per quarter compounds; ten half-finished ones don't.

5. Cross-link from LinkedIn Featured. Every flagship artifact gets pinned in LinkedIn Featured.

6. Run the 30-second test. Have a peer (ideally one not in your field) land on your GitHub or blog. Ask: "What is this person aiming at?" If they can't tell in 30 seconds, the portfolio is misorganized.

Teach / Mentor-Others Track

When coaching a junior or peer through public portfolio strategy:

1. Most mentees over-index on Tier 3. They want to "post more on LinkedIn." Re-orient toward Tier 1 — one finished flagship artifact is worth more than 50 posts.

2. Insist on completion before publication. Half-done public artifacts hurt; coach mentees to finish privately, then publish. The "build in public" pattern works for some founders; it usually does not work for senior IC professionals seeking credibility.

3. Force the thesis-alignment audit. Ask: "If a partner you want to work with reads this artifact, does it support or undermine the trajectory you're aiming at?" Many artifacts mentees are proud of don't support the trajectory; coach them to keep those private and produce thesis-aligned ones.

4. Coach against critique-as-content. Mentees often want to publish "what's wrong with [biotech firm / VC / approach]." Critique is high-engagement and high-downside. Coach them toward constructive framing: "What I'd do differently, and why."

5. The pin audit is a 10-minute exercise with high leverage. Most mentees have the right artifacts pinned in the wrong order, or have stale pins from years ago. A quick audit + re-pin is one of the fastest portfolio improvements available.

6. Confidentiality is non-negotiable. Coach mentees explicitly: never publish work product, internal data, or unfiltered opinions about employers. This is not pedantry — it's career risk control.

• Preparing for VC interviews (partners read public artifacts before the meeting)
• Switching trajectories (existing portfolio may need re-pinning, retiring, or augmenting)
• Quarterly portfolio review (which Tier 1 to invest in next)
