Relationship Stewardship — The Compounding Asset of a Career

Most senior professionals have relationships that should be active and aren't — former managers, ex-collaborators, people they met at conferences, founders they backed. The relationships die from neglect, not from rupture. Stewardship is the deliberate practice of keeping the relationships that matter alive enough to be useful when needed and, more importantly, generous enough to be useful to the other person. The asymmetric leverage: ten well-stewarded relationships beat a hundred undermanaged ones over a decade.

A senior professional's network has three tiers, each with distinct stewardship cadences:

The most-common failure: treating Inner Circle people with Active Network cadence (under-investing) or Active Network people with Inner Circle cadence (over-investing).

Signal-Driven vs Calendar-Driven

Two stewardship modes:

The strong stewardship practice combines both: signal-driven by default; calendar-driven as a backstop for people you'd otherwise lose.

The High-Value Touchpoint

A touchpoint is high-value when it gives the recipient something useful and asks for nothing. Examples:

• Forwarding a relevant article with one sentence of context ("Saw this; the part about X reminded me of your work on Y")
• Introducing them to someone useful with their permission
• Sharing a public win — congratulating with specificity
• Offering an early read of something you wrote
• Asking a substantive question they're well-positioned to answer
• Reaching out during inflection — promotion, new role, public win, public loss

A touchpoint is low-value (sometimes negative) when it's:

• Generic ("just checking in") — empty
• Self-serving ("wanted to update you on my search") — transactional
• Calendar-driven without reason — robotic
• Long without serving a purpose — disrespectful of time

Re-Warming a Cold Relationship

A relationship that has gone 12+ months without contact requires a re-warming move, not a standard touchpoint. The structure:

1. Acknowledge the gap honestly ("It's been a while — I noticed [signal] and wanted to reach out")
2. Give them something (a relevant article, an intro offer, a piece of your recent work)
3. Update them lightly on your side (1–2 sentences, not 4 paragraphs)
4. Signal continued interest without an immediate ask
5. Plant a low-friction next touch ("Let me know if you ever want to compare notes on [topic]")

Resist asking for something in the re-warming message. Re-establish first; ask later.

The Light CRM

A senior professional's stewardship system needs a light CRM — not Salesforce, but enough to remember who's in which tier, when you last touched, and what their current context is. Workable forms:

• A Notion table with: name, tier, last-touch date, context note, next-touch trigger
• An Airtable with similar structure + tag fields
• A spreadsheet for the lowest-friction version
• A dedicated app (Clay, Dex, Folk) for users who want more affordances

The system itself doesn't matter; the practice of using it weekly does.

What Stewardship Returns

Senior professionals who steward well experience:

• Optionality compounding — opportunities surface unexpectedly, often years after the relationship was built
• Diligence advantage — for any decision, there's a small set of people who can give you a high-trust signal
• Reputation compounding — generous people become known as generous; the network self-reinforces
• Crisis resilience — when something goes wrong, the network you've stewarded is the network that helps

What it does not return on a 1:1 cadence: most stewardship investments don't pay off in the quarter; they pay off in the half-decade. Stewardship is a long game.

Self-Coaching Track

For your situation (MD → biotech VC/operator):

1. Tier your network. List your Inner Circle (5–15 names), Active Network (50–150), and the rest is Latent. Be honest — most people think their Inner Circle is bigger than it actually is.

2. Audit current cadence vs intended cadence. For Inner Circle: when did you last reach out to each? Anyone who's been >6 months is overdue. For Active Network: anyone past 12 months is overdue.

3. Set up a light CRM. A Notion table is fine. Columns: name, tier, last-touch, last-touch-type, context, next-trigger. Spend an hour populating it; spend 15 minutes a week maintaining it.

4. Plan re-warming for 5 cold relationships. Pick 5 people from your Active Network or Latent Network you've lost touch with. Plan a re-warming touchpoint for each — not all at once.

5. Build the signal-detection habit. Set up a way to see your network's posts, talks, and moves. LinkedIn following lists, Substack subscriptions, Twitter lists. Signals trigger touchpoints.

6. Schedule one substantive Inner Circle touchpoint per week. Phone call, deep email, or in-person. Not "checking in"; substantive.

Teach / Mentor-Others Track

When coaching a junior or peer through stewardship:

1. The tiering exercise is high-leverage. Most mentees haven't explicitly tiered their network. Walk through the exercise. The act of tiering reveals over-investment in some relationships and under-investment in others.

2. Calendar-driven is a starting place, not an end state. Coach mentees to start with calendar-driven cadence (won't drop people), then transition to signal-driven as their detection improves.

3. The "give without asking" pattern is uncomfortable for many. Mentees often feel weird sending unsolicited value. Reframe: it's how trust compounds. Practice with one or two low-stakes sends.

4. Re-warming requires the gap-acknowledgment. Mentees often try to re-warm by pretending no time has passed. Coach explicit acknowledgment — it lands better.

5. Light CRM tooling is a means, not an end. Mentees sometimes get into endless tool-evaluation. Coach: pick the lowest-friction tool and start using it; switch later only if usage is failing.

6. The compounding takes years to feel. Mentees often want immediate ROI. Coach the long-game framing — stewardship pays off in years, not weeks.
