A scene is the fundamental building block of narrative prose. Janet Burroway calls scenes the "bricks" and summary the "mortar." Robert McKee's diagnostic question is the sharpest test: what is the value charge at the beginning of the scene, and what is it at the end? If the answer is the same, the scene has no reason to exist.

The Scene Must Turn
Every scene should change the value-charged condition of a character's life. The change can be large (a revelation, a betrayal) or small (a shift in understanding, a new doubt). But something must be different at the end. A scene where nothing changes is not a scene — it's a description masquerading as one.
The value turn can be:
- Positive to negative (a hope is crushed, a relationship fractures)
- Negative to positive (a problem is solved, a connection is made)
- Positive to more positive (dangerous — can feel like it lacks tension)
- Negative to more negative (powerful when building toward crisis)
Enter Late, Leave Early
Begin each scene as close to the crucial action as possible. Skip the arrivals, the greetings, the settling in. End before the characters fully resolve their interaction — ideally on a high note or unresolved tension.
The effect is forward momentum. Readers fill in the obvious transitions themselves. The gap between scenes is itself a form of storytelling — what the reader imagines happening in the white space can be more powerful than what the writer shows.
The Five Commandments at Scene Level
Coyne's framework applied to individual scenes:
- Inciting Incident: What disrupts the scene's initial state? (A question, an arrival, a piece of news, a physical event)
- Progressive Complication: How does the situation get more complex? Build through escalating beats.
- Turning Point: The moment that forces a crisis. Often a revelation or an action that can't be taken back.
- Crisis: The dilemma — the character must choose, and both options have costs.
- Climax: The action taken (or not taken — inaction is a choice).
Not every scene needs all five at full intensity. Minor scenes may compress the Five Commandments. But knowing which element is missing helps diagnose why a scene feels flat.
Scene Beats
A beat is the smallest unit of change within a scene — a single exchange or action that shifts the dynamic. A series of beats builds to the scene's value turn.
Effective beat management: each beat should either escalate the tension, reveal character, or advance the plot. If a beat does none of these, it's filler.
Scene vs. Summary
- Scene: Events unfold in roughly real time. Maximum immersion and emotional impact. Use for turning points, confrontations, revelations.
- Summary: Compresses time. "Three months passed." Use for transitions, non-critical periods, logistics.
Burroway's principle: summary contextualizes turning points; scenes dramatize them. The turning points are always rendered in scene, never summarized.
When This Applies
- A scene feels flat, purposeless, or like "nothing happens"
- The user asks about scene construction, scene structure, or scene beats
- A draft has scenes that start too early (with arrivals and setup) or end too late (with departing and wrap-up)
- The user wants to diagnose whether a passage should be scene or summary
- A scene has no clear turning point or value change
